I wish coilovers werent so damn expensive. I know a 4 link will be in the future of my rig, but for now ill have to look foward to a leaf pack.
That is gonna be killer.
When do I bring my truck in for the conversion.

On the frame end mounts I'm going to cap the top and bottom of them for more strength and add a few gussets as well. Not going to finish weld everything till everything is done.
Get the lower links done tomorrow and hopefully get the shocks in place...

Hey I know its off topic but what winch do you have. How do you like it?
willyswanter
01-12-2004, 01:28 AM
Warn 9.5i
Works great for me... I've used it at it's max load pretty much 90% of the time and have never had a problem. Even winched a truck up truck hill in Hollister sideways with it!
damn... okay now i'm gonna be the stupid lowerider guy. What exactly can you do with all of that? I;m guessin u'll prbly end up being one of the most badass lifted guys around.
willyswanter
01-12-2004, 02:37 AM
Well I don't really care about being "the most badass lifted guy around"... I just wanna wheel... My rear springs have been lacking the droop I have wanted out of them... And with a 4 link I can have my desired droop and compression as well as 100% positive axle control and I can predict 100% exactly what the axle is going to do under compression and droop through the design of the 4 link.
Then the tubed out bed is just so I can pivot off trees and rocks with the tube instead of my bed... My bed kept caving in and getting hung up where the tube will slide around...

what size tire are you going to run after you finish
Nicholas
01-12-2004, 11:36 AM
You are extreme when you go wheeling I reckon. But I'm like you too, if I am gonna waste my money on something, it better help me out a lot when 4 wheelin or something. Im not out to have the biggest, baddest truck either, but I would rather have a capable truck, and in the end, with your truck, its not only gonna be VERY capable, but also VERY BADASS

Dark Eternal
01-12-2004, 12:48 PM

Dark Eternal
01-13-2004, 03:10 AM
The trick to doing extrme shit to your truck is doing it YOURSELF. Im far from rich, a poor college student more like it and im affording things I never thought possible because im doing the labor myself. Regearing my 1 ton axles is costing me a few hundred bucks for gears, and the price of lockers. Not a few grand like a shop would charge (over $200 in labor per axle, and thats if they dont have to remove them). The tubing for those links isnt THAT expensive, maybe a little over half a grand for joints, then the coilovers and you got most of what you need. Fab brackets and all and your set. Just make sure to do the research and the math and make a GOOD 4-link. It is more expensive than leafs, but not near as much as you would pay at a shop to have it done.
willyswanter
01-13-2004, 11:08 AM
Plus I have no life so all my money goes into my truck... Other than the neccesities like house payment and utilities... I don't go to the movies, I don't dine out often...
And, I buy my parts over time, collectin till it's time to work... Theres no way I could of afforded to just go out and buy all this stuff at once and do it. I've been collecting the parts for the 4 link and tube bed for over a year now. :superhack
Dark Eternal

Just waiting on some 90 degree adapter fittings that I ordered at the local hydro shop and they will be here tomorrow morning. If I can get the fuel tank in and running tomorrow, depending on if my parts come from Summit, I should be able to test the steering tomorrow night...

Well heres one from todays progress:
http://www.industrialoffroad.com/phpBB2/albums/588.jpg
Finished the gas tank mounts and got it finished up. Got the fuel lines done, braided Earls line with -6 fittings. Made 'em myself, I'm so proud... :anitoof:
I have to wait for a buddy to come by this afternoon and he's going to take me to pick up my steel I need for the bed box. The tubework is done. I just need to make the inside of it an actual bed again. Going to use 1" square tubing for that and 1/8" plate. I'll have class after picking that up so no more progress till tomorrow!
Looks good.
I remember you saying you wanna keep your gooseneck hitch if I remember right.
But how can you pull anything with that setup? Maybe off the bumper if you had one.
willyswanter
01-27-2004, 04:58 PM
The tongue of the gooseneck trailer will still fit in there, turning radius when backing will be cut down a bit but not bad...

The whole "bed" unbolts from the frame of the truck, back window replacement would be easy :)

I hoping for it to be test-driveable by mid next week... I should have all the raw fab done tomorrow, then I get to take it all off and finish welding up the bottom side of the bed, grind the welds down and make it pretty. Shoot some primer on it. Finish welding up the 4 link stuff and get that done which shouldn't take too long. Hope to get all that done by Mon. or Tuesday.
Done completely, hopefully by weekend after next, really depends on if my steering works or not. My ARB won't be here till about 3 weeks from now so I don't know if it will be done before the trip to the Hammers or not but oh well.

The groover is the "Ideal Tire Groover" sold by most racecar shops. It's actually a club item, our 4x4 club bought it together and we just mail it to each other whenever anyone needs it... Works really easy. I just set the tires in the sun for a few hours till they got a little warm. Let the groover heat up for 20 minutes and it took me all of 5 minutes to do all that grooving that you see.

I think you could find a little muffler shop on the poor side of town and those guys will hook you up. Just bring your own pipe and they might do it. Just depends if its a home owned business I bet they will do it, no corporation store will do it. Doesn't hurt to ask around. Hell I bet they could weld them up for ya too.
Damn Willy you got some big ass holes in those welds to the frame, that shit burn easy?
willyswanter
02-01-2004, 01:18 AM
Holes? Where?
As far as the muffler shop, first of all, there benders are not correct for bending tube and will just kink it into a mess...
Where its welded to the frame. Might not be just looks like it.
I figured the muffler shop would work, there is an old man back in my hometown that bends up some good stuff in his muffler shop.
(I just reread my post about the holes and I hope I didn't sound like dick.)
willyswanter
02-01-2004, 12:27 PM
Theres no holes, the little black spots are just the deposits left from welding, that pic was taken about 30 minutes after I welded them on. A certified welder don't take kindly to questions about non-existant holes I reckon! :anitoof:
This is what I thought were holes. Just must be some slag left over. :weld:

willyswanter
02-07-2004, 10:20 PM
Well regular 35 spline spicer stubs are only about $130 for the pair... It's the chromoly ones that get expensive real quick...
Dark Eternal
02-07-2004, 10:31 PM
yeah but the regular ones dont work on ford axles right? Plus I would need new lockouts, I have nice working superwinch ones now. I guess I could sell them but Still I would new a few hundred bucks to do the conversion.

Does he just cut em down and re-notch it for the snap ring? Would there be enough spline left to work with the hubs?
willyswanter
02-07-2004, 11:08 PM
Yep, plenty, it ends up the same exact thing that you would buy from Superior or Yukon other than the material...
Dark Eternal
02-08-2004, 01:34 AM
That is probably the way I will go someday then. That and the warn lockouts. What U joints are you using? I would love CTMs but once again that is money.
Sorry to get off topic in your thread but do you think its a good idea to upgrade the stock yolk on the dana 60 from a 310 to say a 1410?
willyswanter
02-08-2004, 11:19 AM
1350 would be a good upgrade, 1410 is way overkill for what your going to do, and would be pretty hard to find a yoke for your t-case unless you run a 32 spline output 205. 1410 in the rear would be a good idea though.
I'm going to use the new Spicer forged 1480 joints in my 60. Non-greasable of course.
Dark Eternal
02-08-2004, 12:20 PM

Welp, today I got the rest of the old stuff cut off of the frame and wire wheeled the whole thing and primed it. Was about to paint when the wind rolled in and I was gettin more paint on my cab than the frame... My cab is now about 1/6 black and red :anitoof:
Anywho, got the axle end 4 link stuff finished and primed. Got the link arms sleeved, now 3/8" thick, and painted. Got the fuel tank modified, welded, and painted. Got the straps for the tank painted. Got the fuel pickup modified, had to add the line for the vapor recovery, that was no easy task...
As soon as I get some good weather I can bolt everything together, set up the rear gears, throw in the front arb, get the steering working, and test drive it! :ninja:

Time to start setting up gears!

Waiting on my carrier bearings... Only take me 20 minutes to set the gears back in and run a pattern and check backlash.

have fun with taht front ARB though! :anitoof:
willyswanter
02-26-2004, 11:09 PM
When I did the front gears I set it up for the ARB already such as the drilling and tapping of the housing and notching the bearing cap. Just pull the old carrier bearings, grind them out so they slip on and off of the arb, test a few shim packs, press on new bearings, drop it in and go. No problemo, gears are cake :anitoof:

Awsome, good thinking ahead. I just need to get the cash for my 5.13s up front now so i can put those in. Ill probably do the locker later, first priority is to get the suspension on the truck. Killed another IFS part today....

damn thats awesome. where do you get all the money????
Very impressive work.
Will the back tires hit the top of the fender under full flex? I remember seeing that travel you have in the rear and its unbelieveable. I can't really tell that good if you bent the fend in enough to clear that.
Looks awesome though. You gonna camo out the rest of the truck now?

The bed sides will come off as soon as I hit the trail so I'm not worried about the tire hitting them. The tires clear the actual bed when flexed out so I'm not worried about that either. May Camo the whole truck, dunno, someday when I have a paint booth...
Been working on it since Dec. 27th. Christmas day was the last time I wheeled, having withdrawls or something.
Money? I dunno, just buy everything over the course of a couple years and when all the parts are laying in my bedroom floor, I put them together... I bought one shock, 2 months later, another shock, 3 months later, some coils, etc... And I find good deals on EBAY.

Your buying scheme sounds familure. Its torture having a parts pile though!

On board air is done! Got the compressor in, tank in, regulator, water seperator/filter, 30 foot auto-recoil hose real, arb solenoid, etc. All done and working, hooked the battery up and charged the system to 130 psi in about 1.5 minutes, that includes filling the 4 gallon tank from 0psi.

Compressor, cut out the carpet on the back wall to keep it from getting close to the hot compressor, although the thing stayed cool enough to touch the whole time it ran...

i don't remeber if you metioned it or not and searching through 23 pages doesn't sound fun right now....but what spring rates are you running on your coilovers and i didn't see any side shots of your 4 link so i wondered if u built in anti-dive
willyswanter
02-29-2004, 09:24 PM
Anti-Dive would be built into front suspension, not rear suspension. Rear is anti-squat and yes it is built in, 93.4% currently but I can adjust it from 64% up to 130%. Spring rates are a 5 pound tender coil on top, 200 pound coil in the middle, and a 250 pound on the bottom.
