Hey, there--
Just finished reading Torsion Bar 401 in the tech section and was wandering if adjusting the torsion bar could have an adverse effect on the rear end. I have a 2001 2500HD 4x4. Originally, my torsion bars were cranked out to allow for the 33'' tires I had put on. Then I heard about an HD leveling kit (basically a spindle lift) at a local offroad store and had that put on so that I could put my torsion bars back to normal. The ride was still rough (I figured the offroad shop never lowered the torsion bars). So, while getting new tires, I asked the tire shop to see if they could back off the torsion bars and still fit the 33's or else I would settle for a size smaller tire. They backed off the torsion bars and the 33's still fit fine. Now, comes the problem. Ever since, I have had a clunking sound in my rearend area that is annoying as hell. It only happens when the truck rocks from side to side, not straight up and down. The rearend almost feels and sounds loose. I know this is lengthy but I want to give all the details so that I possibly can get an answer. I can't seem to get one from anybody I've dealt with. Thanks, for any info.

No effect on the rears.

Check your U-bolts and Leaf Spring Bushings

Hey, People-
Thanks for the replies. Been awhile since I've been here, but the problem was actually the leaf springs. There was a defect that primarily affected the 1/2 tons but occasionally hit the 3/4 tons. GM replaced the leafs under warranty and all is well.

It should have no effect believe me, on my 01' i was blazin a trail once in the snow up by Sierra Summit in California and my truck high centered on a log buried in the snow and i dropped my suspension on the both the front tires, both the torsion bars broke off and the drive shaft casing shredded off and the rear had nothing wrong with it

Matt-My truck was an '01 2500HD. I don't know how publicized the leaf spring problem was, but it was no problem getting them fixed under my ext. warranty. My service writer told me about it. I now realize that the torsion bars have no affect on the rearend, but originally posted the question when the suspension guy at my FORMER Chevy dealership told me that because I raised the front end with the torsion bars and a spindle lift that I created stress on the leafs. This in turn created noise and voided my warranty. I was leary so I went to some old friends at another dealership and they fixed the problem.
