View Full Version : Underestimated the HEMI

So yeah...had a little stoplight "competition" with one of the new 4dr HEMI's and geez...I got lightly smoked. :bawl: I mean I wasn't expecting much, although my 98 2dr Tahoe is quick, it's bone stock besides my 33in BFG's....I just figured I might of had a slight advantage weight wise....
Anyone know off the top of their head what kinda power the HEMI is putting out?? What it run's in the 1/4? Just to get a general idea....

My buddy was tellin me about a hemi ram he drove yesterday. He drives every kind of car and truck it seems like, and he gets to have a lil fun wiht them. He was impressed wiht the hemi, which surprised me. i think some can run like low low 15s, a few hit high 14s stock i believe, and i would think the 4dr would be a few .1s slower...so maybe 15.4 or so for those...

:word: bigger tires hurt gear ratios and it takes more to turn heavy tires...and it being an "SUV" doesn't help anythign either...i know the difference from 31s to 33s on my truck was insane...i don't even wanna run anything now...i used to always run lil 4 bangers and beat them all day long...lol

of course you lost with 33 inch tires and im assuming stock gears.....
my buddy has a HEMI and i think i can either hang with him or beat him with my Z71. his truck aint THAT fast. and once i pop my nelson tune in that is sitting in my bedroom, he is toast :head:

For sure, the wheels are definatly working against me. It's a shame....But once I get some mods in there, that will change for sure! My goal is to get 350hp out of my 350....so we'll see if that happens ;)

no amount of power mods will make up for the gear situation. i mean, yeah a 1000hp big block wouldnt care but you get the idea......
3.73s are ideal for racing a 30 inch or smaller tire IMO

Good to know, since I basically know JACK about gearing....just something I have not yet looked into. Not that I'm gonna be racing the truck on a regular basis or anything, it's by no means for that. At least that can still give me a slight advantage though. But I plan on eventually switching my wheels to 20's or most likely 22's. I know they will still slow me down due to the weight of the rim, but at least they'll be smaller than the wheels I have on right now.

Oh yeah...How would I go about getting new gears? Just find a shop?? Or buy a certain brand? Like I said...I'm clueless when it comes to gears
Germanator
04-24-2004, 05:22 PM
Get 4.10 gears.... that will do it the next time you come up on a Hemi :bowtie: :head:

you need to identify what gears you have first,
check the sticker in the glove box. if it has GT4 listed in it then you have 3.73s. if not then 90% chance you have 3.42s

Dude...apprently u have NO idea what ur talkin about...hemis are about as fast, if not just a tad faster, than 5.3 silvys...silvys can run low 15s stock (reg cab, short bed) and there is always gonna be a few motors from the factory that are insane and will run a few 1/10s quicker than the rest...no reason for them to, they just do...and i honestly don't know if my truck would even run that slow...18s is just SLOOOOOOOOOW...

Yeah, I wouldnt think that a HEMI is gonna be running 18's.....since I know I don't run 20's!! I mean c'mon that's just crazy.....Still though, I'm sure a HEMI would beat a stock Silvy....but who knows...like you said, there are always the Factory Freaks

I had a 89' Mustang 5.0 tricked out and I ran low 15's. 15's and 16's are really fast. If you have raced or seen local drag racing times you would no that. but who knows I've never seen a dodge hemi truck run the track. and I'm assuming your talking about one of those big crew cab 4x4 dodge rams?

hemi's are neat..but highly over rated. I raced a kid in a ex cab shortbox 4x4 hemi.. still had dealer plates on it. Raced him with my older brothers 1999 k1500 with 5.3, ex cab shortbox- stock except for K&N filter and free mods.. literally just raped the hell out of him. Sure he has a k&N filter, but the way this kid talked... thats not how it should ahve turned out.

the hemi makes 345 horsepower and 375 torque... and with 3.92 gears you'll get smoked no matte5r if you have 350 horsepower or not. especially with 33s.

ok, For yall and yall only, i went in the pouring rain to my truck to grab the November 2003 Sport Truck Mag. They had a SS vs. Lightning vs. Hemi thing. An 03 Dodge SLT reg cab short box with 5.7 Hemi Magnum, 345 hp with 5 speed automatic tranny, 3.92 GEAR ratio, and factory 20's had a quarter mile ET of 15.98 seconds at 86.84 mph. 0-60 was 7.7 seconds. ..... I think lower 15's in a 4 door 4x4 would be impossible unless he was seriously packin. FYI the SS had a 1/4 ET of 15.79 at 87.47 mph and a 0-60 7.44 secs. ......I APOLOGIZE FOR THE GIFTED AND TALENTEDNESS OF THIS NOVEL.

How did i miss this one! As you can see, I have a 5.7L "Hemi'. 345hp, 375ftlbs stock is correct. Most reg cab hemis similar to mine run from a 14.9-15.1 in the 1/4, and a quads run in the mid 15s. Lightly modded, ie intake, exhaust reg cabs run around 14.7. All these times are pretty comparable to a matching GM w/ the 5.3. There are a few guys runnin 100 shot goin mid 13s right now. All us are still waiting on computer programmers and s/c's.

are you saying sport truck isn't accurate? :read: If you are, just come out and say it. :pissed: "Stock" Lightnings have a 14.62 sec ET @ 97.48mph. Where in arkansas are you? I want to meet and i'll have a "stock" lightning and you can have a HEMI with exhaust and intake, and i will bring cash to bet you the lightning wins. :shake: I wouldn't doubt a HEMI could beat a 5.3 though. It would be close. Dodges used to be slow. I remember back in the day i could romp 5.9 Rams in my Heavy ass 96 z with the 350 vortec. :worship: GM for the vortecs. Jake

im not saying theyre wrong, either their drivers suck or their at a high elevation track, if they have stock lightnings goin 14.6, theres a problem w/ them somewhere! Im in Jonesboro up in the northeast corner. You can go to any lightning, or dodge forum and get the correct time slips.

(The lightning was an automatic!) <--- I didn't know they had autos...
I got to thinking about it and if the lightning barely beat the dodge, that is slow for a lightning. Sorry if i sounded rude :pissed: , i didn't mean to, but when i reread my reply i did sound like an ass. My cousin lives in Jboro and goes to ASU. You might have seen him. He has a black H2 and a silver and black honda cbr954. Jake

Cool, has he done anything to the H2? There are a few around here anymore. Lightnings run mid 13s pretty much stock, w/ that and the other times, i think the track they (Sport Truck) are at must be pretty high elevation, that would explain for the crappy times for everything.
jdrake19
05-01-2004, 08:02 PM
No, he hasn't done anything to the H2. At one time he wanted 26's. I'd rather get a nice audio/video setup than 26's. I looked to see what track Sport Truck did that at but it didn't say. I like your sig will. Jake

I laugh at 4x4's that think they are fast. My bro (16) has an 03 4wd with the nelson tune and he thinks it quick and always races, but somehow gets beat 70% of the time. I just laugh, im sorry but unless your supercharged, or running a desiel with mods racing in a 4x4 stop light to stop light against 2wd trucks you have to expect to get beat.
I havent pulled up beside a hemi yet to see what they have. And by the looks of it I wont have a chance since suspension work will be done next weekend and racing on 36's wont be the best thing to do.

i've heard launching in 4wd on pavement is worse than in 2wd mode because it puts a bigger load on the engine.
i dunno, i do it rarely, only when im exteemly bored and driving around, but what do i care, im selling my blazer in a few months anyways

Even though they are rated at 345 horses and 375 foot pounds of torque they only put out about 260-270 rear wheel hp on the dyno's.
