Best buy has a unit that plugs into the laptop and you just put the gps unit on the dash and it comes with software and everything for like $140 I had one but sold it... It works great, and i cant remember the name of it, but that is the easiest way if you have a laptop...

do you have to download the maps first and then upload them to the gps?

I think you should save your money and get the Pioneer AVIC N1. My friend is getting it soon, soooo many features! Well worth the money. Thats just my oppinion though. I've seen a lot of navigation units for cheap in Best Buy's Sunday papers. Take a look.
