so i think im gonna step up to a diesel...while still keepin my 00 silverado....

truck im lookin at is a 01 Xcab shortbed 2500, ctd and 5spd manual...(thought 6spd was the only manual?)....

it's got 120K miles on it and he's asking $10,000 OBO....

so since i know jackshit about CTD's....what should i look/hear for from the motor? is $10K a fair price for the mileage?

I believe it's a little high for it. My buddy got a 3500 Chevy, with a dump, salt spreader, plow and 18 foot trailer for $13k. It only had 62K miles.

cummins powered dodges hold their value too much...kind of hard to compared...sounds like your boy got a good deal on that truck tho

as for the truck...can't help a whole bunch there...but from what ive heard, quality of the truck overall went up starting in about 03...

if the truck is in overall good shape, then $10k is a good deal for a 24valve cummins truck, 4wd I assume?
in 01 and 02 you could get the standard output engine (235/460) with the 5spd, or opt for the high output engine (250/505) and get the 6spd. from what I gather, there's really nothing different between the two motors, it's probably just in the tune, but the nv5600 (6spd) is much stronger than the nv4500. either of which is still a great tranny in my book.

I think the most common problem on those trucks is the lift pump on the driver's side of the motor, about 2/3rds of the way back, below the valve cover. they tend to lose their "ass" in terms of pushing fuel. when they do that, the truck will feel like it has no power (starved for fuel) and shortly there after, will take the starved injector pump with it. so beware.

if it were me, I would IMMEDIATELY change the lift pump (about $120 bucks), as well as all fluids and filters (oil, fuel, air) see what the service interval is for valve lash adjustment. other than that, you're good to go!

the truck you described (minus the xcab part) is exactly what I want!

good luck, any pics?

IMO, if you are going to go with a 2nd gen get a 97-98, good interior and a 12v at a lower cost. However if I could find a good condition 01 4x4 with a 5 speed and only 120k for $10k I'd be all over it. All of the owners here want $18-22k for thier 00-02's when the 03-04's are in the $24-28k range with significantly less miles. The difference in an 02 and an 03 is worth more than $4k IMO.
