Hey has anyone used this water based paint on their trucks? I want to learn more about it.I am googling it But i wanted to hear it from people who have it and have sprayed it. Thanks guys.
it dries different, you have to have a completly different set up to spray it and you have to have fans and some other shit to make it dry. a guy from TRI State coating was trying to sell it at the body shop where i work but its kind of a pain right now untill they come out with the waterborn clear.
water based paint doesnt dry like normal paint, you have to have air moving over the surface to carry the water away.. past that, its supposed to even out much better than the other stuff... (cant for the life of me think of the name of the other stuff lmao)
i was watching a wrecks to riches episode the other night, and they sprayed the solvent based paint next to the water based paint... teh water stuff evened out so much better than the solvent based... so there was less orange peel after the clear was layed down
when i get ready to paint a vehicle, i will definitely have it done in water-based
does it smell the same? is that a serious question lol
i have a cromax pro machine at work. sprays easy, covers really well, get full coverage on almost all colors in 1.5 coats, drys out pretty flat, we have air blowers that blow large volumes of air across it to help it dry faster
blending is a bit different on it since you have to lay out a wetbed and blend into it, i never colormatched solvents but I have a camera and it gets me within a pretty good ballpark range and I colormatch from there, you have to spray out test panels also since the controller is really milky so no more stick matching since it dries completely different

I highly doubt you'll see a waterbased clear anytime soon. It just isn't designed to hold up against the pollutants (acid rain, winter road spray, etc.).
I was watching Street Customs the other day and they said the state of california has to use water-based now. They sprayed a black Maybach and when he was spraying it, the black looked green until it dried. Also the painter was saying its really easy for the paint to run.

humidity and temperature have a LOT to do with the paint now, you have to put it on pretty heavy and if its cold out and lots of humidity, it can run easily and take FOREVER to dry. I have a few infra-red heat lamps with fans built in that help with it and then the venturi blowers
I had to match a goldish orange on a motorhome, mixed up the paint and it looked like a dark brown, sprayed it out and it was almost a perfect match just had to make 1 small adjustment to get it to be a good color
the blowers look like this, cant find a pic of the heat lamps but there pretty badass too
Werd I saw that too...also said that the paint looked smooth with no colorsanding compared to normal paint...
I find that funny. They're using a standard clear, not water based. It should have no more or less orange peel than normal. Most orange peel has to do with the gun as much as the product.

the waterborne base coat lays down flatter compared to the solvent based paints ive used, it helps with the orange peel in the clear since the base doesnt have so much orange peel in it
I talked to a guy at a paint store about water BORNE paint the other day. He told me it is easier to run than regular color coat, and you need a special setup to spray it. What he mentioned was the need for a very good water seperator for your air supply a water borne specific gun and a crap load of air movement over the paint to dry it. He said the advantage was that it is better for the environment.
