Default Gas gauge not working not working need help!

hey guys My shop teacher Mr Jimenez has the same truck as me a 04 silverado and his gas gauge is not working. So i told him ill help him out with it. My guess is that the stepper motor went out on it but i could be wrong if it is the stepper im guna pull his gauge cluster out for him. I have experience with this because my speedo and tack went out and i pulled the cluster out. thanks guys,Evan

if its the same as it was with mine it's the fuel pump. i went without a gas gauge for 3 years... i fixed it saturday by replacing the fuel pump in the tank

I would use a tech II and do a gauge sweep test. If the gauge passes the sweep test then most likely the sender is bad and you have to replace the fuel pump to fix it. Same problem on my 03 silverado, but i haven't put in a new pump yet because the pump still works. I just fill up bout every 250 miles.

It's the sender more often than the gauge. I'm pretty sure you can buy the sender separately instead of having to buy the $300 sender/pump module.

Yes, however if you go through the trouble to pull the pump its not a bad idea to replace the pump with something good.

Definitely a good idea if that kind of expenditure is a viable option.

Me, I'd just ignore the gas gauge and use the odometer...I wouldn't even spare the cash for the sender.

lol now that my gauge works again I still find myself looking at my mileage. if I forgot to reset my odo in the past it was like I just found out my dog died.

I can't forget to reset mine. I write it on the gas receipt, then when I get home I feed it into the computer so I can keep track of my mileage and notes about it...helps me know what works consistently and what doesn't, also it can alert me to shit going wrong in the truck.
