begin by removing the 350 and trans as one assembly

    sell the current powertrain

    sell the 454

go to the junkyard and buy a 5.3/4l80e from a wrecked van, make sure you get the wiring harness and fuse box

    install assembly into your '86

    do burnouts

I'm not sure with your body style truck but for 1988-1998 the small block and big block use the same motor mounts so it shouldn't be too difficult. I have a 454 i intend to replace my 350 with when the spirit moves me. I've been accumulating parts for the swap for a few years. There are definitely advantages to doing a LS swap as Tim W suggested but in my opinion there is nothing like the rumble of a well tuned GM big block under the hood. I know going into it that i will never be close to 20mpg again but that isn't important for my build. I don't intend to use mine for a daily driver at any point. That being said, make sure the rest of your driveline is up to the increased horsepower and torque of your 454. Your current cooling system, transmission and differential may not be ready for the new motor so keep that in mind. Good luck!
