so I've been thinking about adding a 50-52 inch bar on the roof of my 2002 silverado. I have also heard that mounting these on your roof makes a loud whistling noise in the cab of your truck. i have mounted one on my buddys 2012 silverado and it did do that. is that maybe the way you mount it? or do they all do that? any info would be good

    thanks

The easiest way to fix this is to never buy a giant wind obstructing light bar. But if you must, learn to live with it.

it may even cause your roof to warp at highway speeds, which adds to the symphony of annoying noises one creates. they're also uglier than hell 99% of the time. what do you need 50" of light for on a 2002 silvy?

There has literally been this exact same fckn thread within the last 2 months or so. the fckn thing is going to whistle and be ugly as fuck. If you would have put any effort into searching you would have found the fgt threads from last time and discovered your answer. :bird: your ugly ass light bar.

The whistling is caused by the cooling fins on the back of the bar. If you choose to put said light bar on:

    1) use the proper roof mounts that are drilled into the door jam.
    2) Multiple places sell rubber insert resonators that prevent the light bar's cooling fins from whistling. Or do the home depot fix posted earlier.

Fair warning, those bars are legally supposed to be covered when you're not offroad (i.e. any paved road). There is also a chance of the roof leaking through the mounts if not mounted properly.

If you want a light bar really badly, mount a 30" or 40" behind your grille. That way you get most of the usability of a roof bar without as many potential issues.

Do it all these guys are haters. I have heard of people putting caulk over the fins on the back and that stopping the noise too. Ball out man. Roof mounts are the best.

If it's for off-road use and you actually need it who cares if it whistles a little on the highway. If it's for a daily driver that rarely sees trails then skip it.

I know @11MPG mounted one on his burb roof and I was hating on it until I saw the output, but then he actually wheeled that truck.

proper mounting of a roof mounted light bar on a daily driver:

    step 1: purchase light bar

step 2: throw it in the trash

step 3: roundhouse kick yourself in the face
