In the market for a new used truck. Right now my price range puts me in a 2008 or there abouts. I see many with no apparent rust but I know that secretly there is rust getting ready to pop through as soon as I buy it. I looked at one truck that had been treated every year with a pump sprayer full of motor oil. A little googleing showed that this is not a rare practice. it even said that a truck with rust inside panels could be stopped by an oil spray which would soak through the rust to base metal and thus, the rust would be stopped. I then googled rustproofing sites with indicate that rustproofing is still common practice and does a quality job of stopping rust. But my concern is whether these rustproofers do a good jod of getting into all the important nooks and crannies like tail gates, rockers, INSIDE frames, the tops of fenders and quarters insde the double walls, etc. So, please talk to me about rustproofing. Can I truely buy a 10 year old truck and put a stop to any rust? What is the best affordable process? Thanks

What is your location? Michigan? Arizona?
If you really want a rust free, drive out west.
I got my 08 this year in Texas, as far as rust it is clean, only rust is the spot on the frame that dragged a few times. They have good covering from the factory, like a oil.

Seriously, shop for a truck out of the southwest or south central part of the country. You'll be miles ahead of anything you can find in the rust belt states.

we have oil undercoat businesses around here, id say it does a pretty good job at stopping rust but its not a sure thing, only thing thats 100% effective is not driving them in the winter, but most people cant afford a second vehicle so they choose to spend the $150 get them oiled and it helps. it all depends on who does the undercoat on whether or not its done well, like any job.

I spray fluid film inside the rockers and in every nook and cranny I can get the nozzel in on the body of my dmax. It's a 2002 with 317k on it and is completely rust free. It's originally from Canada and was imported and lived in Minnesota before I bought it, now in North Dakota. I've had it for 2 years now.

What is the product you use?
I'm in Michigan and going across country is not an option.

Fluid Film is the name of the product. I'm in Michigan also and I order thru my local Auto parts store.
You can get in gallon containers.

Spray it into the holes on the bottom of rockers and the gaps around the rear wheel well. I use the straw on the end of nozzel and just move it around to spray at as many angles as possible

I have an '04 sierra 4x4 that I have had for many years. I make sure to rinse underneath the salt and shit away when ever I wash the truck. This fall I was dismayed to notice some outer rear lip rust. Had a look up inside and saw 3 plastic plugs on the inner that I had not noticed before. I removed these and a bunch of damp sand drained out. I rinsed all that crap out and this year bought Fluid film aerosol and hosed it around liberally everywhere I could. I expect the Fluid film will penetrate and stop the rust but the damage is done. I will do this every fall from now on. There are many drain areas lower on the rockers and fenders that need to be cleared periodically.
