replace two piece drive shaft with one piece

    i was working on my little vibration issue last night with my friend who is a transmission tech at the chevy dealership.........he was telling me i should replace my two piece drive shaft with a one piece aluminum shaft.......cutting out the carrier bracket ect..........he claims the vibrations are caused by the two piece drive shaft and is why theres a carrier bearing.......is there any ill effects of putting a one piece in?....also he says our factory drive shafts are super heavy and an aluminum drive shaft would be nice and light........i'm skeptic, need feedback......thanks

    I think it's been talked about before but with no conclusion. I'd do a search first.

    my truck came from the factory with a one piece shaft. I know the ext. cab shortbed trucks and the reg. cab shortbed trucks have a 2 piece shaft, but im not sure why my reg. cab longbed came with a single shaft.

    yeah i saw somewhere that you had a one piece DS......i was gonna ask you if you did that yourself......maybe cause yours is a longbed????.......do you have any vibration?......

    Could they just be out of balance? My dads suburban has a 2 piece shaft, no vibration whatsoever.

    maybe?......anythings possible i guess......i kind of like the idea of a lighter one piece drive line......apparently there is a significant wieght difference.?????

    Do you have a big diesel shop in the area? They usually have the equipment to spin that shaft(s) and get them balanced. I have heard to many stories of vibration and an unbalanced shaft was the culprit.
    I just replaced my aluminum shaft with a Nitro1500...it's steel. There is a HUGE difference in weight...however my original one piece broke under torque, so I am not going back to the $600 GM Aluminum shaft. But if you guys are curious why are they so damn light besides just being aluminum...hope the pic attachment works...

    I'll keep my old heavy steel one thank you very much :D I never thought it was all that heavy, besides, I think that weight is in the right place, I wouldn't want to be putting alot of torque through a driveshaft that is designed to be light...who knows what they cut out of it.

    Don't really need a big diesel shop though, around here we have a couple of driveline shops that do this kind of work as their business. I got both my ujoints (before I knew how...) replace and balanced (and they painted it!) for $97...

    Ofcourse Whifflebat...Texas...I am here in Maryland and I bought my driveshaft and both yokes from Texas, including shipping it was still cheaper than here. Amazing country that Texas! :imo :rocking:

    A 2 piece shaft is to reduce the length of the shaft and the angles and stress that could be applied to a lengthy shaft. The two piece is actually better than the single long one. it splits the angles over the two shafts rather than applying them over the single shaft.

    If you plan on lowering the truck a single long shaft will create you some major problems as well woth clearences..
    Have a drive train shop check the balance and straightness of your shafts. Replace the u joints and carrier bearing. Also install the 3/4" hevy wall tube spacer like I suggested in your other post.

    :word: while my truck was being 'bagged, we discovered that since my stock shaft was so big around, it actually hit the bottom of the cab when the truck was lowered, so I had to have a brand new smaller diameter shaft made.

    that's most likely cuz u have a long bed.

    I used to build drive lines for a living.. Running a 1 piece long enough for your needs, it would have to be like 4-5inch round, just to handle the torque and the speed.. 2pc's are used for a reason.. take the shaft out.. have a driveline shop replace the joints, carrier bearing, and balance it. Make sure you put it back together correctly.. the same way it was balanced.. a 1 piece is possible, but it would cause you more headaches in the long run.. I hated balancing 70"+ drivelines.. it would freaking take forever
