what kind of oil goes in the transfercase? what is so special about the expensive oil gm wants us to buy?
If its auto 4x4 it needs autotrac. im not sure if anybody else makes it, but i thought somebody did...but it would be even more expensive. DO NOT put in atf. if it is auto

What's so special about the autotrac fluid anyway? mine's an autotrac case and it has a sticker on it that says Dexron III, and the guy who did a partial rebuild of it for me put dexron in because he didn't have any autotrac around. he told me to put autotrac in when I had time. (I have some, still haven't put it in yet.)

Was Dexron III the original fluid and it got superceded by autotrac? I dunno why mine has a sticker that says that.

I never use the auto4wd function anyway if that matters. crap I havent even gotten to use the 4hi or 4lo buttons in a long while either.

my obs tahoe took dex 3. they came out with a bulletin saying anything with clutches in the tcase should have autotrak. its a bit ghetto imo, if he was rebuilding your tcase and didnt put in the proper fluid. i have no idea what the difference is, but a new tcase is about 1600...the $60 in fluid is a small price to pay for something that will help it last longer

Using the incorrect type of transmission fluid in a manual transmissions or transfer case may affect the sealing ability of the seals. An incorrect type of sealer may not be compatible with the transmission fluid or may not have the correct characteristics for sealing the affected components. An incorrect type of fluid may also have adverse chemical reactions with materials used in the TC or trans leading to premature failure of components.

If it says AT use AT, if it says Dexron use Dexron.'

DO NOT use Dexron VI in place of manual transmission fluid in any manual transmissions or transfer cases that specify Dexron III, as a failure may result.

Amsoil was working on reverse engineering a fluid for this application but nothing yet. From the NNBS 2007 on the requirement is no longer AT-II, its Dexron VI.

BTW-I stock AutoTrac II fluid here for customers and it costs me less than $10 a qt. I get thru a AC Delco dealer, not the GM dealer. Dealers are 2x and 3x the price from AC Delco for the very same parts. TC should only use about 2 qts, if that.

I pay less than $9 a quart at my dealership. Not very expensive, IMO.

I assume some don't believe the warning about Dexron VI so here is the back of the bottle. Plus that state above comes right from a service bulletin.
