I want to thank the Forum for the opportunity to post, this is the my first time on a forum. The GMC mechanic diagnosed a collapsed AFM lifter, recommended all lifters AFM and non, VLOM, and camshaft be replaced. My grandsons and I pulled the engine with the idea of rebuilding and eliminating the DOD. We have disassembled the engine, and I plan to have an automotive machine shop check tolerances, clean the head's, block crankshaft etc. I have reviewed numerous websites on eliminating the DOD and it’s almost information overload. Does anyone have a recommended rebuild kit for this engine that is complete with cam, lifters, pushrods, valley cover, timing chain etc. etc. Any advice on this project is appreciated.
In addition the GMC mechanic noted the lower control arms needed replacing, and one drive axle boot needed replaced. My daughter had bought this from a dealer out here on the Kitsap Peninsula, it appeared to be a pretty nice truck for the first 8 months, then the codes started, I should have researched the 5.3 AFM issues, now I know.

You want this. I will list the options you want below.
  • Lifters: Morel replacements. The Delphi LS7 style suck massive. Those Morels should be pretty good.
  • Head Gaskets: Whatever GM head gasket is yours.
  • Head bolts/studs: ARP Head Bolts. GM head bolts are one use only and if you ever have to redo it then you need new bolts. Buy once cry once.
  • Valley Cover: L92 Valley Cover
  • Balancer Bolt: ARP Crank bolt. Same as head bolts, one use only.
  • 3-bolt conversion kit: Don't know if you have a 3 bolt or one bolt cam
  • Camshaft: LM7 cam 3 or one bolt whichever you need.
  • All the gaskets and stuff you will need so add those
  • Exhaust manifold bolts get the ARP stainless or the chromoly it does not matter. If I had to do it again I would do stainless cause my chromoly ones have rust on them and look ugly

Thank you. Would the timing chain components be reusable in your opinion?
No. Even if it’s non-VVT and you possibly could, no. DOD motors use a single bolt timing gear and cam. The single bolt really limits cam options, pretty notorious for snapping dowels, and TTY. Plus the dampener is garbage, they usually break just by pulling the gear.

Just upgrade to 3 bolt LS3 gear, chain, and dampener. Reusing the factory crankshaft timing gear is fine, but only that part.
