5.3 New Muffler with Stock Pipe

I have a 2004 GMC Sierra 1500 with the 5.3. I ordered a new Magnaflow muffler, 3 inch inlet/outlet.

The stock pipe on the pick up is 2-3/4". Can I just slide the 2-3/4" inside the 3" and clamp or weld. Is it a better idea to change pipe size to 3"? Opinions?

You'll be fine just sliding it in and welding it up.
I agree but it's a large gap and will be nice if you have the pipe ends enlarged for a good fit before welding. I'd say the new muffler is shorter so you can probably find what you need at the parts store to make it work. Should sound bad ass.
I was also going to say widen the pipe
I'm thinking the truck might enjoy the upgrade. I believe the stock tubing is stainless. I've got 265k on my exhaust and it's still intact!

I am thinking so too. Mine has 205k on it and everything is looking good on the exhaust system. Just looking for a little sound upgrade.

Where are you at with using clamps vs welding?
Weld always if possible.
I put on a 16" Magnaflow last night......talk about annoying. Pick up sounds real good at start up and idle, put the cruise on 55mph and you just about can't stand it. Thinking I will try 22".
