"Winches"? Yes. This specific winch? not necessarily.

This will be maybe my 50th winch I've ever installed. What I've learned from that is that one winch won't necessarily interchange dimensionally with another.

The center of the drum is not at the center of the side-to-side measurement.

The reason I'm worried is that the specs online show the center of the drum at roughly 14" from the long side.

That's 1-1/4" less space than what the winch would need to have the drum centered.

If that makes sense.

If that turns out to be the case, i guess i could have the fairlead offset 1-1/2 (that's the 1-1/4 plus 1/4 clearance from the frame Rail). It might not be a practical issue.

But that would bug me to no end.

That's as much an option as anything else. But not wanting to get the cart before the horse.
I want to wait to see what's what once the winch is actually in hand.

Who knows, the technical drawing i found online for the winch might not be correct. It was for the gen 2 X20 12K. I ordered the gen 3, it might be different enough that it's not an issue.

I'm hoping that's the case. *fingers crossed

Had a friend do this on his 99 sierra that was rusted out, but he did it with used cutting edge from payloaders, he owns a welding shop so it was a free "upgrade" 😂

I'll probably be installing my Eaton E-lockers this next week.

Figure i should beef up the rear cover if I'm pulling it. Thinking one of these.

It's listed to fit the 8.5, other 8.5 covers interchange with the 8.6. Any thoughts that it won't?

Also it's red, but I've heard tell that red diff covers aren't "a thing". When i order this, I'll be sure to pass that along. I'll tell one of the largest worldwide differential parts manufacturers they need to stop right now. 😆

Today

The lift is having issues. Had to do it on the ground while it was snowing. It never got over 30°

I only got halfway through the front today

It's all buttoned up now.
I was thinking it felt much warmer than yesterday. I guess it was

Lockers are in, and working.
I've always liked the Eaton E lockers.

Plus today:

I was able to measure and find that the center of the drum is 11-3/8" from the long end.
Meaning the tech drawing i was going off of was incorrect.

So in theory the winch fits between the frame rails transversely. Now the Only variable is how it fits vertically. How high up i can tuck it.

Things to figure out another day.

The radiator and AC condensor are the limiting factors.

Neither of those pieces fall under the "cut it until it fits" umbrella in my book.

I'll tuck it as high as those will allow

I had to trim a little out of the aluminum bottom of the core support. And capped the frame horns off with 1/4

Welded in the winch mount

Rattle can black

Mounted the relay box to the braces in the core support

And good to go

Not only is it not below the frame rails, it's tucked back pretty tight.

Next is to build a bumper.



Also my new taller 60" high lift jack doesn't fit in the cargo area except diagonally, taking up a lot of space.

Having not built any substantial structure on the outside yet. I opted to go to the roof rack.

The rack rails hold the head of a bolt nicely. I used some washers and coupler nuts to space it up.

It's behind the light bar at the same level. I don't expect a lot. But i haven't driven it yet.

It was easy, and It's temporary, until i build bumpers that i can mount stuff to.

Now I've got a solid answer, went on a 200 mile trip with it. It makes no noticeable wind noise. I didn't go over 75. So who knows it might howl like a banshee at 100mph though.

I Totally know that i should have a bumper, or at the very least recovery hooks (that haven't shown up yet) but the itch to wheel was too strong.

All the suckers unloading their trailer queens at the parking area 😝

Found this weird crooked flagpole on top of a snowy slick steep hill climb. A climb i never would have made without lockers

It's Tuesday. That's the same thing as "last weekend" that i said I'd weld on the recovery points right?

They're closer to the bottom of the frame because of how i plan to do the bumper. That's next. At this rate like 2 or more weeks till that's even started.

So when i closed my shop in 2019 i had to sell stuff to you know....eat.

I sold my plasma table and my full hydraulic jd-squared tubing bender.

As such I've been at the mercy of other shops to do my tubing bending. Specifically the literal 1 piece i need bent for the bumper. And the 2 pieces i need for the steps to weld to the sliders

But with King of the Hammers going on right now. And their own subsequent prep for it.

I can't get anyone i know to get it done until after hammers has settled down. 😒

And 2 of the guys have tube dragons for crying out loud. It shouldn't be too tough. But Everyone is jerking me around.

I live in a desert, only sagebrush.
Sagebrush can only bend 3/16 wall tube. I'm using 1/4

Any other ideas?
