you can unplug it to which to one of a different color but you cant permanently remove it

if its set to "off" can it be removed? with out undoing the battery?
i ask this because im swaping colors from tan to dark charcoal and need to swap that cover...
or with it off can i removed it all together with out any lights and etc?
ill figure out a way to keep that new cover in place if thats the case...
