Couple of Interior Parts Painting Q's
I'm alsmost done spraying my dash, but I have a couple of questions. For those of you that painted your interior, how did you paint the handle bar that goes over the air bag? What about the air bag cover? Did you remove and paint that too?

I have heard of guys fiberglassing over the airbag cover to have a smooth surface for the paint to stick too...as well as the grab handle. Of course this will also make your air bag useless...so that might not be the route you want to go. How thick is the material in front of the airbag? I wonder if it could just be removed and sanded smooth and then shot with paint without harming anything?

what about that new paint from dulop or what not that bonds to all sorts of plastic? some new technology or something. doesnt flake off or nuttin.

the color won't match using that paint...

Its soft so if ur head hits it, the time of impact is spread out over a longer time interval than if you hit something hard. Fiberglassing the air bag... 'nuff said. Some people when they do it, make a cut out for a PS2 or a XBOX so its not a total waste of space...

Where do you buy some fiberglass to do this. I've never done anything with fiberglass but been wanting to. Would Lowe's or Home Depot have it? I'm sanding the top main dash this week as well as some other stuff too.

You will have to fiberglass that part. Any "soft" parts you will have to do. Once you do that sand ... filler "if needed" primer and paint.
If you paint it and someone pushes on it .. it can crack on you.
As said about it going off .. you will want to disconnet it .. or find a blown one to do.
You can get fiberglass at most "pep boys" and can get it at any paint supply house. It is very easy to mess with ..

lay the bulldog adhesion promoter to it and threaten anyone's life if they touch it.. thats what I did lol
Thanks guys. I think I'll leave the airbag alone for now. Now, about the handle, I was thinking of just doing what Larry is saying, but I can see how the paint would crack. Now, how would I go about fiberglassing this thing? I've seen sub enclosures being fiberglassed, but I don't know if it's done the same way? Somebody help me out here.....

the airbag box shouldn't crack at all.. I can push on mine hard and it doesn't crack one bit, the handle doesn't even crack when you squeeze it.
Theres still a chance that it could tho.. thats why I'm having the handle and bumps for it cut off and fiberglassed over this winter.

How's the airbag box removed? I haven't taken that out and didn't even check out how it's held in there, but now is good time to do it. As for the handle bar, I'm going to try and fiberglass that one.

I just masked off my entire interior and painted it inside the truck lol
I was running out of time to get it done before the first show of the season and it still turned out pretty good.
