Anyway...if my charging system isn't working so well (and I know it ain't) could this be a reason for my amp not kicking on?

I know the wiring is fine as it will come on for a few seconds then go back off.

Should I try bypassing the cap? I have a new alt in the mail...

check all your grounds, make sure any of the wires aint touching, the amp could also be bad. The charging system would have nothing to do with it, everything else in the electrical system would be screwy not just an amp.

Grounding. I think 99 meant voltage and not ohms, unless he has a good reason how resistance is playing a major role in your power. Powering on, and then goes off after a few seconds is not a good sign. Possibly the amp:(
Try keeping a voltmeter at the turn on lead, and then at the power lead. See what happens when you turn the ignition or deck on.
