This may seem like a dumb question to you all but I'm looking for an exaust for my truck. I keep hearing about this Flowmaster 40 series. Thw question I have is what do the different series mean? I have gone to exaust shops where I live but when I ask the question they give me the "WTF did he just ask me" look. So any help is greatly appreciated. If anyone has bought and installed the Magnaflow cat back let me know how you like it and how it sounds, that's other exaust I'm looking at. Thanks

in the flowmasters the series is what tells you about the design and how loud each other mufflers are. If you can get your hands on a couple of pamphlets they list the series in order from loudest/most aggressive to the most quiet. I have a few of these pamphlets laying around somewhere from the local shop.

Basically this is how it goes-

(Ranked from loudest to quietest)
10 series - single chamber exhaust. Loudest of the flowmasters.
(actaully a racing muffler)
40 series- dual chamber exhaust. Next loudest. Very powerful,
aggressive sound. (My personal favorite)
80 series- extremely aggressive sound. (Designed for crossflow
applications ie- Camaros and Corvettes)
30 series- deep, powerful sound
50 series- somewhat deep- kinda mellow
70 series- very mellow- alot like stock exhaust
60 series- a 4 cylinder rice muffler

Delta flow mufflers- Most series offer original (described) mufflers and
delta flow mufflers. Delta flow mufflers are three chamber
mufflers. They are quieter than the original series. They have less
interior resonance.

I hope this helps Matt. If you have any more questions just post them and I will check back later. Also, I recommend checking out the flowmaster site (www.flowmastermufflers.com). They describe every series in detail and provide sound clips. When I first started looking I was confused too. Good luck!!

i would say the 80 series is noticably louder than the 40!
