So its a little different, but something some of you may enjoy.

I am a industrial maintenance manager at a rather large bridge manufacturing facility, we move millions of tons of steel a year so we have some rather large equipment.

Back in april of this year over a long weekend one of our big forklifts caught on fire and burnt pretty badly. The cause of the fire was a shorted charge wire from the alternator to the battery, it ignited all the old greas and oil grime of the side of the frame, which was right next to the fuel tank.

The engine and trans still worked afterword so we decided to repair it, so far i have only put around 18k into it, another used 25k lift runs around 80-90 k depending on hours and condition.

On to the pics.

The day after the fire.

Then started the teardown.

Everything was scorched and had to come out.

After it no longer looked like a forklift we carried it over to our paint area for some much needed TLC.

And finally it had a little bit of color to it again.

We have it back to about 60% complete now, every hydraulic hose had to be replaced, the whole wiring harness. The hydraulic and fuel tanks had to be sent out for cleaning and re-lining, the radiator had to be sent out.

The fire burned so hot that it actually warped the front of the transmission case inward and locked the torque converter up, i lucked up and was able to find on for 1k.

I will post more pics up later on.

^ That is the plan, the machine is an 86 model so parts are hard to find, but i got lucky and managed a factory wiring diagram and found some old hydraulic prints to set it all back up.

Yeah as a company we are covered by insurance, but i dont know what went on with it. They did an investigation and such and about 3 months later we got the go ahead to rebuild it.

These things are awesome to work on when you have an unlimited budget though.

Well this has been completed for some time now, but here is the end remainder of it.

Cab and all the other small parts were completed.

Wheeled the machine up onto our carport and started to come together.

Then got the engine and trans back in. Engine is a John Deere 414 6 cyl. Trans is an Allison 3300 series.

Finally moved under its own power almost a year after the fire.

After a few days we had some small leaks and bugs pop up.

While doing this i had the wheels and tires changed from 2 425 tires to 4 1200's up front, increased the rating to 30k lbs. I also had the pumps re-geared to increase flow and pressure, factory it was operating on around 2500-3000 primary pressure and 200 lbs of charge pressure, now it runs 5-6000 primary and 600 charge. It is capable of lifting 18 tons, but the counterweight is not heavy enough. We added weight to it for a few lifts and the machine lifted(with ease) 15 tons.

Overall this was alot of fun to do and only ended up costing around 28k to repair. This is the best machine we have, did end up rebuilding the motor around january, we didnt rebuild it after the fire.
