I've been looking at getting a new daily driver to replace my omni i have now and thought about a s10. but i also want something thats quick and can average 20mpg on the tank.So do you guys think a s10 ext. or single cab short box with a 5.3 with boltons and a small cam (no bigger then like a 220/220 or 222/224) with a t56 and 4.56s could get me close to 20mpg?

A 4 cyl S-10 can get you 20mpg consistently. However, I have a lot of friends with the 4.3 V6 in a S-10 and they all get 15-16mpg.

I really don't see you getting 20mpg out of a fullsize truck either, unless it's 90% freeway driving. My stock 2wd/4.8 Sierra is getting 14 in town and 20 on the highway going the speed limit.

I've heard the new Nissan Frontiers are getting a solid 18-20mpg on a regular basis with their 4.0 V6.

I have a 91 S-10 4cyl/5spd and its get around 21-22mpg i love it for daily driving, although Ill probably be putting a carbed 4.8L in it sometime this year., But when I had my 02 Silverado RCSB w/ a 6.0L, Comp224. TCI3000, and full bolt-ons I got 13-15 city and 21-23 highway.

the answer is absolutely yes. Here's why

1.)S-10's weigh a shit load less than fullsize trucks
2.)T56 swap will have that 6th gear which will give you a couple extra mpg's.
3.) I'm running a tr224 in my 5.3L and I can average 17.5 on a full tank of gas.

Obviously though your 20mpg will be a little out of reach if it's mostly city driving, but there's no reason why you setup shouldn't get you 20mpg

Did you reprogram the PCM for the different tire height?? I have a friend who gets 15 mpg with a 2007 Classic reg cab shortbox 4x4 on 22's.

A 5.3 in an S-10 should be able to get 20mpg with a T-56 trans a 4.56's. Just dont use too tall of a tire or 6th gear will lug and be useless.
A 28" tire with 4.56 gears 0.50:1 OD gear(6th gear) will cruise at 73mph turning 2000 rpm.

A 31" tire with the same numbers as above will give you 1800 rpm at 73mph.

A cam is going to hurt fuel economy. Too keep fuel economy I would look a a Vette cam like an 01 LS6 or maybe the 02-04 LS6 cam.
Proper PCM tuning will also help power and mileage.

I tune myself with EFI live(I've gotten help from a few guys along the way). I'm actually getting better gas mileage with my cam and tune than I did bone stock. I just filled up today actually and averaged 16.5 with all highway driving and 3 0-110 WOT runs.
