I can think of quite a few ways to better spend $3000.

yeah i would recommend looking for a 2.5 truck with a stick,


i know around me those old bodystyle s10 are a dime a dozen with the 2.5 manual combo and they get pretty great mileage.

not only that a decent one can be had for 500-1500 bucks

id put 3 grand in the square body to make it better on gas
X2 my current truck with its extremely stock 305 gets pretty decent mileage if i baby it, cruise about 55-60 mph

i dont have any exact figures but i can get to work and home on less than $10 in gas (approx 3 gallons) and its a 70 mile round trip so whats that like 24 mpg give or take, id say thats comparable to newer vehicles.

but i do have a 700r4, a tiny carb, and highway gears (3.73 i think)

Man, I have a stock 305 with a Quadrajunk and 2.23s and I get shitty mileage. I drive no faster than 55 all the way to work and back and it's a 40 mi. round trip.......however, the TH350 was given to me by my dad who races and I think it has a 2600 stall in it. Biut since that boat anchor (305) doesn't have enough oomph!, I am yet to test that theory lol

yeah mine has a what i think is a 450 or a 500 cfm edelbrock quadrajet on it, and the OD will make a huge differance, highway speeds im sitting between 1500 and 2000 rpm (est by ear)

yeha i was thinkin that on the gear ratio too i thought 3.73 gears were the highest gear ratio for these trucks

I looked in JEGs earlier and they have a 550cfm Elec. choke Edelbrock for 315.00
a 550 cfm carb would be a good start, but since you say your motors bone stock i would look for even smaller, these 305 dont require much carb, some thing in the 450 -500 range would be ideal
