Whats the best/easiest way to go about prepping the stock front chrome bumper on 06 chevy for paint? I am going to be painting the chrome part red and want to know the easiest way to prep it.

Sand the shit out if it will very rough sand paper (80-120 grit). Use a drill with the sand paper wheel attach. Spray a few coats of self etching/ filler primer, wet sand smooth, spray another coat, wet sand, and your good to go from there.

Ive thought about blasting it but I dont know anyone local who can do it. I know a few people with small cabinets for parts but nothing able to do a whole bumper. Im looking at doing it all myself.

I have an air powered DA, not sure what the lowest grit paper I have for it but was gonna give that a shot first.

I don't think sanding chrome is the safest thing to do.

The rear bumper wasnt chrome so I didnt have to worry about painting that one, just sanded it and painted

I think you are right for the front bumper. The WTs had the gray painted rear bumper though as you mentioned.

Sandblasting will be your best friend. I too was gonna do this, but to do it right I was just gonna get a black bumper off ebay that way I didn't have to worry about removing all the chrome platting.

I bought paintable bumpers for a work truck. Sold my chrome ones for same price...
I'm gonna have to second this. If your bumper is in good shape, trying to flip it for a paintable bumper from LMC or something is definitely MUCH easier to tackle then sanding all that chrome. That's what I did.:)

Can scuff with Scotchbrite to rough it up. then wash well with degreaser and let dry before you prime and sand smooth.

If you have access to a hand sander of some sort that is your best bet. Rough it up with 80 grit real good, then follow with 180 to knock out some of the deeper scratches. 2 coats of etch primer, 2 coats of a good catalyzed high build primer, sand smooth with 320, 400 (maybe 600 depending on color) then you'll be ready to paint. I've been doing grilles and other chrome stuff like this for a while now with no problem. Just like any other painting project, skimping on prep work will always turn up and bite you in the end.

Thats a great write up!!

Too bad I dont have near the knowledge or stuff to do that kinda high end work...Im on a budget and doing it with spray cans, yes I know its not gonna be high quality finish or might not last as long as proper paint, but I still use the truck and I like to do all my work myself since im a mechanic so I hate paying people to do work for me.
