So I finally decided that I'm going to put two jl 8w7's in my CC silverado, but want to know the sound difference between a 1000 watt amp vs a 500 watt amp. I heard two 8w7's with a 1000 watt amp and it sounded awesome, but I already have a 500 watt amp that will work. Does the 1000 watt amp make the subs hit a lot harder than the 500 watt will? Will it be extremely noticeable?

Thanks

More wattage=louder. Every time.
False.

However, in this case the 1000 watt amp would be significantly better. Running half of RMS power on 2 subs that are insanely inefficient will greatly improve going to rated power. Not just in output, but quality.

You'll be running at 1.5 ohms because they are 3 ohm subs, so a Sundown SAX-1200 would work out well for $395.

Most definitely. And don't get me wrong sundown amps are some of the best if not THE best amps around, but they're more expensive than most people want to pay for. And yes before it gets mentioned, I do believe you get what you pay for, but most don't have the spare income. And as proof of my love, I'm really considering a 1500 watt sundown amp once I get this box built for my sa-8's

Do et! My buddy had a Precision Power 1500.1 amp when when i came over with my 12'' hdc3 and box cause i didnt have an amp and he said hed let me use his until my saz 1500 came. Once we hooked up the saz, it was a world of difference i couldnt even believe it. Both amps were [email protected] and it was night and day difference. The sundown woke that audioque 12 right up.

I've got a buddy who's willing to give me his kendwood 9105, I know its not a top of the line amp but its 900+ @ 1 ohm and 900 @ 2 ohms so it should be somewhere between 700-900 watts @1.5 ohms correct? Would this amp work?

a guy i used to work with at a shop ran a 500/1 on his 8w7 and it powered it well.. i def would not under power one of these subs.. may as well save some money and go with w6's in that case. yea i hate how jl does that stuff being an average consumer brand, i think they do it so that you will want to buy their amps with regulated power supplies. or just run in a treo for a 1ohm load.

Just curious but how can more power equal less output?
You said more power = louder always, but my statement doesn't mean quieter, just not louder. There is power compression, mechanical limits, etc. that even in the same install, more power won't do anything. What if your electrical can't support a bigger amp? You may have a "more power" amp that can't make more power. Just because some other guy has more power than me doesn't make him louder either.

Put crap in, get crap out. Not all rated amps are created equal. If you want 1500 watts, I shouldn't have to tell you to buy a 2000 watt amp, but that's what happens when consumers aren't as informed as they should be or just want more than they can afford. Some people just don't get the fact that just because it says 1500 watts doesn't mean it does 1500 watts.

You found out what's up. Cost more, get more. Better power, better quality. (I feel like I'm in a Papa Johns commercial).

And the max wattage crap is really damn annoying. I dont give a crap about max wattage but when I try to sell a sweet 1000 watt rms amp and they can get a "5500" watt pos power acoustik amp for half the price and I miss my sale it's annoying. I don't own or have anything to do with a shop like you so it's not all that big of a deal for me but I bet you have problems with it. Some people just dont understand the point of rms vs max wattage. I mean the sundown amps are averaging what like 1.25 times their rated power though? That just shows a quality product. They're not exaggerating their specs at all.

And here i thought Precision Power was known more for their amps then anything.

Sundown is infact the real mccoy, it really makes me what to find out what there subs can do :hmm:

I always find myself getting caught between i can get "X subs'' which are louder and handle more power, but i might not exactly have the wattage to give them, so maybe the next step down would be better?

I dont want to stress anyone anymore about my this vs this vs ranting, but say both ''properly'' setup with the same tuning 34hz, 2 10'' W7 or 2 12'' w6v2? How would the sound compare? and which setup would ultimately be louder? Im searching for a used 10'' W7 but came across to 12 w6v2's.. How would 2 10'' w6v2's compare to 2 10 w7's? Thing is i can give more power to the w6's.. being they are d4 ohm so my amp would be stable at 1ohm where the w7's have the crappy single voice coil and 3ohm so my amp would be at like 1.5 powering the two.

They USED to be. Then they got sold, and it went to crap. They haven't been worth a damn in probably close to 8 years.

W6v2's sound better than W7's. W6v2's are as loud as W7's. Overall there is probably equal displacement, but like I said, W6v2's are just as loud. Bottom line, W6v2's cost less, sound better, and will end up being louder.
