I believe I made a thread not too long ago about how my batteries keep dieing. I've been through 3 or 4 batteries in my truck since I got it, almost 2 years ago. On the latest battery, It's been doing good for a while. But recently I have felt my truck has been sluggish to start, like the battery was low. So I checked it, and it was about halfway charged. Last night we put a charger on it for a while, and it went to about 70%. Today I checked it after I got home from school. Maybe 25-30 mins of driving, And the battery was down to 50% again. We have a charge on it right now, and are going to charge it fully. But I'm thinking about buying a new alternator. Do yall have any other suggestions? If not, where can I find a good deal on an alternator? I called up AutoZone, they told me it would be $140 for a remanufactured one. I looked on the internet, seems like you can get one from $90-$180, but I'm sure shipping wouldn't be cheap. Do yall have any suggestions on a certain brand?

Thanks! :shake:

Edit: Truck is an 03 Silverado 1500 5.3
And I do have a stereo system. 2 amps, and 2 10" subs.

Sounds like you have something pulling on the batter even with the key off.....Do you have other things hook up like a system, neon lights, etc?

I have a system. It shouldn't be pulling anything while the truck is off. It's rigged up pretty ghetto though. I wouldn't be surprised. But I'm sure my battery would be dead all the time if that was the case. When I get a brand new battery, they work fine. I think I had a bad battery, and it messed up the alt, and now my alt is killing my batteries? Is that possible?

Don't make fun of me. I'll call you for a jump when my truck dies.

And an alternator is not a cool mod to waste money on. I'm going as cheap as possible.

Never heard of an alt. killing a battery, just not charging it which causes it to die. How long does it take before your battery is dead? Check to see if you have power at the amp with the key off.

None of the lights on the amp are on when the truck is not on. I'm not sure how long it would take to drain the battery. Today it went down about 20% with maybe 20-30 mins of driving, my alarm on all night and on 5 hours during school. And I had my stereo on this morning. Not sure if that tells you anything. But we just charged the battery, and it held a charge. Hopefully it'll stay full.

Get a DMM (digital multi meter) and with the truck running test the battery (put one probe on the + and one on the -). Make sure the DMM is reading DC or Direct Current. It should read somewhere around 14.4 volts. With the truck off, you should get around 12 volts.

I'm gonna see how my battery does tomorrow. If it's not charging, I'll probably run by autozone and pick up a new alt. Have you ever done it before? And when were yall going to hook up your lights?

Anybody know how difficult it is to swap out the cables that run to the battery? And where to buy them?

yes it can. if you have a bad diode in the alt it will drain your battery. a short will also cause a charging problem. best advise would be to remove the alt. and have it benched tested. it will show if your voltage regulator, diodes and windings are in good order..
if your alt checks out good, a load test of your battery shows good, then you need to start checking for a component that is draining your battery. most common are improperly installed alarms, stereos/amps and lights..
if all check out good, then put a DVOM on your battery and get a reference voltage after about 5 min. for the battery to stabilize it's voltage, and then disconnect your AC compressor clutch harness and check for a voltage change. (been known to be a source of power drains if bad)..
if no change +-.5v start pulling fuses one at a time and check for any changes.

this will keep you busy for a while..it is a place to start

good luck....

Well, it did good after I took the connections to the battery off, and cleaned them up, then tightened them back down pretty hard. Before I did all this, the battery was at 80%, after cleaning them up and running to the parts store it went to 100%. That was yesterday. Today, i get home from school, and it's down to 60%. I guess my next step is to buy the alt.

Desrtrat, thanks for the info. How would I go about checking to see if something is installed improperly? I don't know the first thing about installing an alarm, and I know minimal about setting up an amp/subs, but I do have an alarm, and sound system.

YOUR FUCKED...:jester:

who installed the system for you? if you know get with them and explain what going on and have them go throw the hole system and fix it. if not..if you still have the wiring diagrams that SHOULD have come with the components, then start from the beginning of the install page and retrace each step. like find a place to mount a item, find it and make sure it is mounted properly, and so on...it is hard for me to explain any better with out overwhelming you with info. do you have a buddy that's good with wiring diagrams or just good a figuring out things, would help you out a lot. it's not really hard but can be confusing..
i still suggest having your alt tested before you just replace it. ALSO..there should be some type of in line fuses for everything, i would remove them until you can trouble shoot the systems

good luck

I bought the truck used, and it had everything installed already. :bawl:
I had the alt tested a while back (a few thousand miles?) and it was fine. I'll check it again.
