my august list of performance mods....anything im missing?

804 Views 16 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  s3gulit
Alright guys, my sweet yearly check is comin...decided to allocate $3000 for truck shit for this month, so...figured $1500-$2000 in performance, other $1000 in exterior shit...

Truck is a 4.8L/5spd Reg Cab w/ hips...already have a CAI/catback...

Since im goin for the 4.8L N/A 13.2 record, figured i'd start off simple...

01' LS6 Cam
LS6 Springs
Pacesetter LT's
ORY
ASP pulley's
Efans
gears (either 3.73's or 4.10's)
Nelson Tune

Hitman and myself figured i should be lookin at around a 90-100rwhp gain, dunno if our math is right but after i took out parasitic powerloss, DD2000 seems to support it as well.

So anything im missin, or anyone care to add sometin?

Nelson Tune
IIRC I hear his tunes have went to shit. Ive heard nothing but good about Justin on here.
hrm, i havent seen anyone posting anything bad about them, then again i havent seen a thread about his tunes in over 4 months either.

might just take it up to speedINC in schaumburg (chicago) and have it dynotuned then...
Ported TB?

Cleaned up heads?

Full roller rockers?

go with justin... i promise he wont disappoint.

ive got an ls6 cam going in mine as well, let me know when you get it in.
+1 on Justin's tune
6.0?
not gonna happen hank....only way i'll go 6.0 is if i get sick of the 4.8 and 5.3 that are sitting in my shop.

already have a ported TB, heads we'll see about, might send them out for cleaning...for RR's even though their ok, i might go with some shaft mount 1.7's...just because.

If your going for the 4.8 NA record then a LS6 cam is surely NOT going to get you close to that. Why do all that effort of swapping the cam and springs to swap in an LS6 cam and springs. BTW I would definitely not get a Nelson Tune unless you can get a street tune from him, all his mail order tunes are pretty much default now.
custom grind cam... :read:
First of all if you're going for the record then some of the stuff you listed is going to have to be done twice.
1.) You won't break the record on a mail order tune. You'll need your VE tables,spark,a/f, etc spot on
2.) You'll need a much better cam than the ls6 cam. While it's a great turbo cam, it's not THAT great N/A(still not a bad cam though)
3.) You'll need 4.10's not 3.73's
4.) You'll need DR's there's no way you'll hit a low 13 with stock tires
5.) You better have everything in by this fall because the weather right now is crap, and the fall is the best time for racing
6.) I'm not sure what your elevation is but that could mean almost a 1.0 second lost on your 1/4 time

Basically the stuff you have listed right now isn't going to get it done. With the stuff you listed you're looking at a low 14 with good weather.

I'm not trying to be a dick, but I don't want you to set yourself up for failure and then go out there and run a 14.2 and be pissed.
na man, i know how the game rolls...unfortunately, i know most parts we be swapped back out, and i really dont care if i have to do it 30times, lol.

right now weather is beautiful for us, i've got 10.5W slicks sitting in my shop, im trying to find someone who can do a good tune....

i never said this is the setup that is going to try and beat the 13.2 record, i just said i aim to beat that record. and here's a list of what of gonna put in my truck...i know this setup isnt close to what i need, but its a good start until probably march of next year since my track is shutdown until further notice right now.

I'd be happy if i ran a 14flat being the truck weighs around 4300lbs, with these mods.

you realize that you completely just contradicted yourself right?
i woudl say a larger cam also..and a bigger stall...stock stall and ls6 cam wont get yah that deep in the 13's i dont beleive. ID go with a 220 220 and a 3200 stall...but that limits you to chargin afterwards
I agree with above, you'll need a bigger cam and definitely some head work to see 90-100 rwhp gain. The f-body guys are lucky to see a 100 rwhp gain with an LS1, decent cam, and some nice heads. I really doubt you'd see that with a smaller engine.

Sell them to me!:read:
wow, guess i didnt word my earlier statement correctly, lol...

I meant to say i aim to beat the 4.8L N/A record, but not with the current setup...i've gotta keep it pretty driveable as its my only vehicle at the moment and until i can afford a duramax or 02 SS camaro, i could use decent MPG.

I've looked into a three angle head job, along with porting, but im not sure if im ready for it yet since i dont have a spare set and i use my truck everyday.

I dont need a stall since its a 5spd man. trans....i dont expect unbelieveable gains from the LS6 cam, but it'll definately help it out quite a bit IMO. i hold every gear to the upper RPM's on daily street driving anyway, and i know the LS6 cam is a good mid-upper rpm cam which is good.

Next year i'll probably be able to go apeshit on it and get everything to make it a high 12 second truck, but i know these mods should be able to get me in the low 14's if everything is done right.
