I believe that my differential may be going out. In concrete parking lots, I hear a some tire squeal if I have the wheel cut all the way. My truck is a '08 RWD with the G80 locking differential running on 245/70-17 tires; I plan on putting bigger tires on it eventually.

If I have to replace the differential, would it be a good idea to change the rear gearing? I'm not sure exactly what gearing I have currently, but the truck has always had these smaller tires and averages about 15mpg.

Secondly, are there other symptoms I can look out for that show my differential is going on? Or is a tire squeal in sharp turns normal for the G80?

I'd have the diff oil changed first and the axle looked at before assuming the diff is going bad due to a squealing tire. That squeal could be a result of tires getting old or just the tires compound.
As for changing gears for bigger tires, that depend on what ratio is in there now, and what size tire you want to put on.
