I've always just grabbed the boot itself and not the wire, sometimes carefully with a pliers. I try to never pull on the wire itself though...

The plug wire boots look completely different from my 97. What is the proper way to pull the boot off the plug? Do I need a special tool? I have separated a wire from the boot once, and it was not a great time for all.
