Quick 5.3 swap question

Hey everyone, I'm in the process of finding a 5.3 to drop in my 89 and was wondering what I should do for a transmition.

Should I try to find a 4l60e to put in or go old school with a th350? I'm thinking a th350 would be cheaper and I'm not to worried about the lack of overdrive. Will it even bolt up to a 5.3 and what else would be needed to make it work? Thanks

Yes the TH350 will bolt up.
It might bolt, up, that im not sure about. You have to think vacuum, or tb cable, etc. Is your 5.3 drive by wire, or cable actuated? Honestly, if your going to go through all the work of putting a 5.3 in, may as well go with an updated transmission as well, but thats just my .02

It will bolt up fine.

I wouldn't use a 60E and consider it an updated style trans. :rofl2:

Its certainly an updated style, but I never claimed it was better. I am extremely biased towards newer GM vehicles though. I think that everything before the 5.3 was garbage because they leaked too much and had no power. carbs are against my religion. That being said, I think the 4l60e is weak as a stock trans. Pitifully weak. But they can be built quite well. I would go with a turbo 400 if i was going to stick with old school, as long as it will bolt up. (Pretty sure it will considering both the 350 and the 400 were behind the 5.7). and that is a tranny i have heard AWESOME things about
Do you know when that trans style came out? 1982... do more research before commenting about it MAY bolt up. Hell you can bolt about anything to a Chevrolet motor... BOP are different as you should know.

I'd run a TH350 over it for what he's asking (well I would want something with an OD so I'd rock a 200-4R). The 5.3 has no need for a TH400 behind it unless it is going to be boosted, even then could still get away with the lighter duty 350 unless he's going insane with the power.
Ironcast powerglide :read: DO ETTT

Do you mean the 4l60 came out in 82? he was asking for opinions on transmissions, i gave mine. I'd run what came behind the engine from the factory.
Hey thanks guys for your opinions. I would like to think that eventually I would run some form of power adder down the line so that's another reason I wanted to stay away from the 4l60e..I'm shooting for around 350-400hp when all said and done.

Hitman is the 200r4 overdrive? I ask because there's a guy I know that has one just sitting in his shop and owes my dad some rent money so I probably could work out a deal lol
Just did a quick search and it looks like it is overdrive

Any benefits of running a 200r4 over a th350 besides having overdrive? Thanks

Yes the 200 is an OD unit, it's not super strong stock (think 60E) but is geared FAR better and is a beast when built properly. It's based off the 200-C which I recall being a light duty version of the Th350.

Anyway, input drum is weak, input shaft, servo, valve body, etc. Similar crap to the 60E. The 60E does have larger planets but eh, it has more inherent issues to me. :imo

IMO, the authority on them is the real Art Carr @ California Performance Trans.

60E is fine @ 400hp FWIW.
Art Carr at Coast Performance Transmissions can get you a 200-R4 that will have anything you can throw at it like about 800+ Horse. Plus in the last few moths they came out with new valve bodies that takes away the last weak link in the 200 and 700 R4 designs.
i'll have you a 5.3 in a few months:shake: even have a stock 60e if you're interested:jester:
