Hey folks, I'm in the market for a previous generation Silverado short bed, no extended cab.

Its mainly going to be a work truck and something I can take my dogs to the beach with. As far as mods go I'm only going to go as far as an intake and exhaust for better MPG.

That being said can you guys post what engine you have and what kind of MPG your getting.

I'm leaning towards the 4.3 since I'm sure it gets the best MPG but for comparisons sake I'm wondering what 4.3,4.8 and 5.3 guys are getting.

Thanks for your input :waytogo:

4.3L is so old that you won't gain MPG by opting out of the V8 all you gain is the absence of HP. A co-worker's 4.3L/5spd could barely break into the 20s w/pure hwy driving. Meanwhile pure hwy netted my 5.3L ECSB 15-17mpg. A reg cab 4.8L would almost guarantee 20s on the hwy, so that's what I'd suggest you look for.

So 4.8 is the way to go?

I know the 4.3 is 200/260

Whats a 4.8? 270/300?

My main priority isnt power with a truck, its getting 20 MPG or close to it. If a 4.8 can pull it off on the freeway that would be great :head:

I've also heard, be it on this board that most people with a truck and the 4.8 are getting better gas mileage than the 4.3. Added benefit obviously is a little more power, but the point here is that in a smaller vehicle, the 4.3 probably wouldnt be a bad choice but the 4.8 just seems to balance out the weight of a truck a little better. I used to have a 4.3 in a Jimmy that wouldnt get 20 MPG now that i think about it and that was in a vehicle that weighed quite a bit less than a RCSB I'm guessing. My suggestion would be the 4.8. Just a heads up to, you'll sell that 4.8 faster than the 4.3 too when you decided to sell.

I've got an '06 RCLB with a V6 5 speed, I get about 24 hwy, and 18 city, I have a tonneau cover aswell. If I had to do it all over, I would get a V8. I've read that they get better mileage and the obvious power advantage: 195 HP for the 6'er and the base 4.8 V8 has 285 HP.

I have a friend that avgs only a few miles per gallon better than me in his S-10 Extreme with a 4.3 Auto and I have a ECSB with a 5.3. We both have cold air and exhaust. Although he probably rags on it all the time.

It can get good mileage. the 4.8 has 285 hp at the crank. I read it has like, 240 at the wheel, not 100% sure on it tho.

I don't know about 240 at the wheel... when I dyno'ed my truck I was right around 230-240hp and 265lb ft. I've got an ECSB w/ the 5.3L and I get about 15.5/16 mpg around town or a little over 20mpg if it's all highway.

I can get my truck to hit about 17-18 MPG if I don't romp on it. 4.8 V8 RCSB. If I get on it to much though it usually drops down to 15-16MPG. Truck has CAI, headers, magnaflow exhaust, and a Nelson Tune for performance. It's also sitting on 20's which are a bit heavier than your avg. 16" wheel.

you can buy my truck for $10k=) 4.8 5spd and has 67k miles...and its 8 years old :)

i have never driven 'all highway' but around town i get 16mpg and i romp on it a lot...might take it easy next tank of gas. i did have one tank of gas, where the first 2/5 of the tank was highway and i got 20mpg on it.

i drive 8 miles to work, 8 miles back..4 stoplights 2 stop signs.

Oh how I envy you. If I take the interstate, which is longer, 11 red lights, and 2 stop signs. If I take the shorter route, on airline 27 redlights, and 2 stop signs. And its 40 miles each way.
