Smoothing Out Fuse Box?

2116 Views 25 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  01GMC
I know it's under the hood, but most threads about smoothing out plastic starts here. Ok I can't get that thing smooth so what all have the guys that's done it did to get it smooth? It's a different kind of texture than what the dash is made of and it's harder to get the texture out.

Glass it and then smooth the glass? Just an idea
I assume like such?

I just sanded it down with 80/100 grit, then switched over to a higher grit .. like 220 to kinda top it off and get the hairs off. Then you can prime and such.

Filler primer will work too and save some sanding.
Ok ok thanks man. I just got the same engine cover too, did ya do it the same way as the fuse box?

Do you need a smooth paintible battery cover?

Engine cover is a fiberglass copy of the carbon fiber engine cover. I didn't want the caddy symbol on it.

I didnt' get a smooth battery cover, that is the stock one, I just sanded the letters off. The cover you are talking about is a POS stick on one.
I bought a 6.0 one, which looks pretty much just like the escalade one, but says 6000 on it. How would you recomend me smoothing it out?

Here's what I would do. Flip it over, if there is a impression of the 6.0 .. like if you sanded it off there would be a whole. I would flip it over and fill that in with fiberglass resin and some weave.

If it is smooth in the back, as no impression .. just sand it off. Get me a pic of the bottom side of the cover.
ok I will it hasn't came in yet, so it'll probally be next week until I get some pics posted.
I thought you meant you fiberglassed the entire covers. I can do a small piece like that with no problems cause I fiberglassed my dash bezel where my gauges are mounted.

Yeah the small part ...

However, my entire engine cover is a fiberglass copy that was made.
oh ok gotcha. How hard was it to make? What all did ya do to make it?

I didn't my body man made it. He made a mold. I didn't want to have the symbols on it, so we got one, and made a copy.

What cowl do you have? Looks so much better painted.
Street Scene.

Get the fiberglass one. That what mods can be made to it if fit is a little off to fit your taste.
So would I use the same grit sand paper for the radiator cover, and engine cover also? That looks damn good 01GMC :bowtie: :worship:

I did. The idea it to remove all the texture. You can use whatever grit you feel like. Just let the paper do the work .. if you press hard you will put in "finger" groves and those suck.
Thanx, I gotta start on mine soon  :worship:
Also, 01GMC what intake are you running? Is it possible to smooth a K&N Tube?

It's a Volant intake system, yes you can smooth a K&N ... it's basicly what I have.
