ok, heres what happened, i was just getting on the freeway and at about 60mph i loose all power, i pull ot the side and rpm's drop to 150-200. then the truck dies. i try to start it after and it fires right up and seems normal, so i procede to drive home instead of work. about 3 min down the road, at a red light, rpm's drop and truck starrts to shake and the engine dies. i try to start it and it wont fire up, its cranking, sputters around 200rpm, and then shuts off. i also see white smoke coming out the rear. could this be a bad fuel pump? clogged line? or just the fuel filter? any other possibilities.

sounds like a bad coil or distributor. Same thing happened on my car. Just dies on me, would sput around, no change in engine speed at any throttle level. Cost me about $200 to fix

White smoke can be burning oil as well, However I think Its completely ruined and you should pacakge and ship me your drivetrain ASAP for further testing.

White = water/antifreeze
Blue = oil
black = rich

If it's a '96 vortec (assuming by your username) it most likely is intake manifold gasket judging by your description of white smoke(coolant, it is actually steam you are seeing). Theses engines are notorious for it going out.

They best way to diagnose if water is getting into a cylinder is to do a compression test and a leak down test. You can also pressure test the cooling system to check for leaks. Like I said, these motors are notorious for this.

like jebx said, could be a leaky manifold...but first thing i thought was maybe distributer...my magent cracked on mine, i thought the tranny was goin out on me for a lil while, then one night on the way home the truck sputtered really bad 3 times and shut off...thankfully i was 1/4 mile away from my neighborhood and was able to coast home (stopped on top of the big hill before my neighborhood and rolled down it and down to the bottom of my neighborhood, like 5 houses away from my house). i would check your magent on your distributer, if its cracked, thats def your prob...i don't really know how a leaky manifold gasket could cause that big of a problem, unless its REALLY bad...but it does sound like something ignition related if u ask me...might as well go ahead and do a basic tune up (new coil, plugs, wires, cap, rotor), and that may help it
