I have a 1983 Chevy fullsize 4x4. Having trouble shifting in to high gear. Where do I start to correct this problem? Something must be sticking, like a valve.? Any help would be great. The truck is an automatic.

I am thinking the original trans. I just purchased the truck a few months ago. To find out what trans it is, where do I look?

Roll under and take a look. Probably a TH350 or a 400, unless replaced. Get me a pic of the pan and I'll tell you.

350 has like a notch out of one corner, the 400 is pretty weird.

When did they switch to the 700R4? I know my 1984 Chevy K10 originally had a 700R4 before I changed it.

well does it have over drive?? but if not being it a 4x4 its most likely going to be a th350, as far as i know th400 are used in 2wd. but with the shifting problem, it might be a clogged filter, earlier models used paper. and later used screen, service your tranny. it should fix it.

700 came out in '82 or 84.

400 was in 4x4 too.
