ok so my trans is going out, slipping super bad, here's the deal

I can get a low mile 4l60 for $650-800
low mile 4l65 for $800-1000
or a really low mile 4l70 for $800

what's the best option, also I need to know EVERYTHING that I'm going to have to change to do a 65/70 swap

anybody ever done one?

DOnt know much about the 70 but a 65 is basicly a built 60. You wouldnt have to change anything to put it in. Swap in and out is all. If you are hard on your truck then go that route but if you dont really need it then just get the 60 if its 200 cheaper

DOnt know much about the 70 but a 65 is basicly a built 60. You wouldnt have to change anything to put it in. Swap in and out is all. If you are hard on your truck then go that route but if you dont really need it then just get the 60 if its 200 cheaper

The 70E is just a 65E with an extra VSS. Same so-so transmission..... If you beat on it hard, a 65E is not the be all end all of transmissions. Do servos and a HD-2 kit while its out.

And learn to go easy on it.

The 70E is just a 65E with an extra VSS. Same so-so transmission..... If you beat on it hard, a 65E is not the be all end all of transmissions. Do servos and a HD-2 kit while its out.

And learn to go easy on it.
ok I don't really "beat" on it but I do tow stuff quite often, does sit through lots of stop and go traffic and I do wheel it

70e
aux cooler
servos

sound like a decent plan?

70E won't work in your application. So for the few hundred more, do the 65E.

Verify the unit is a 4x4, if not... you're not going to be able to use it.

:jester: you had me looking at my sig for a few seconds like WTF....:think:

:word: That was my point, the 70E drops in to the newer trucks.

The 65E is what you want and yes sir, do verify the setup 4x4 or 2wd.

so why won't the 70 work if they came in 05-06 trucks?


If you have to ask, then you don't need a further explanation aside from it won't work.

Are you in Austin? Where in Central Texas are you? There's a badass transmission guy in Austin who has built some really stout 4l60e's including mine.

about an hour north of austin

I guess my point in all this is I don't want to be putting another trans in my truck later down the road, I want to UPGRADE. Who is this trans guy you speak of?

Any factory based unit is marginal at best, go with the cat Mark recommends.

From all I can recall, it's got an extra 3-4 clutch, obvious five pinion planets, and some sort of revised valve body. It's really not much, I HEARD GM finally updated that sungear shell... if so, it's about 20 years too late :rofl2:

ooooooooo, and I think something with one of the shafts (input or output).

That shit was all discussed back in '03 when it came out in the Silverado SS.

4L65E is not a gift straight from god? :jester:

They're right, its not much more than a 60E and still has major shortcomings.
