I've been having a problem recently on my 97 silverado 1500.Automatic tranny. Sometimes i cant get it to shift from park.the wheel turns freely but the shifter just wont budge from park.I've been able to get it to work sometimes by turning the wheel,or turning the engine off and putting the key in the on position then putting it in neutral, then turning the engine on then into drive. But this doesn't always work. Today it did it the worst, nothing worked, they wheel wouldn't freely turn, and the emergency lights wouldn't blink.I eventually got it into neutral and then turned the truck on and put it in park.

any ideas on what i should check ?

There is a rod that goes from the brake pedal to the shift mechanism. So if your putting your foot on the brake and it's not shifting then I would check that rod. It's about 12" long and goes from top of brake pedal to near the key cylinder.
also check your brake switch if it is bad it won't engage the rod he is talking about, easy way to check is step on your brake pedal and see if your brake lights are working
