Mmmmm. Face loaders. I dont know exactly what they are out of or who made them. But those aren't the typical "5 ton" axle the pond skimmers are running.

They are a planetary axle, probably too much gear for the 17/40 Hawgs that are on them now.

They look like the Rockwells that are in a loader at work, except skinnier and one is a steering axle. I dont know the ratio, but it's deep. I wouldnt put those under a truck with less than a 60" R2.

Front loaders is about all I can say about them. They have a closed kunckle design aswell.

I noticed that too. I'd be interested to see if it had a Rzeppa joint or a Tracta joint. Perhaps a Bendix or Birfield type.

Werd id like to know the joint type. I know Toyota Birfs are weak in stock form, but in the 5 ton application IDK. Maybe a dual cardan style joint in there?? Depends on steering degrees. Cual cardons are good for about 35* ish but i could be wrong aswell too!

Just more to confuse you with.

Tracta joint:

Rzeppa joint:

Cardan (ujoint style) joint:

Birfield joint (bling ass Bobby Long D60 pieces (the little one is a D30 birf):

Dual Cardon joint:

I once saw an article that explained the evolution of the axle joint. I cant remember where it was. It went from Spicer's first joint to a rzeppa joint to a tracta joint to a birf, then later it evolved into a constant velocity (CV) joint that is in wrong wheel drive cars today. It was very in depth and explained a lot.

Actually in the Bobby long pic it looks like a Toyota joint aswell. Reason being is the sealing surface on the inner shaft.
Thanks for the joint type listings Daniel!

Well, the only reason Id say it's a D30 is when I was searching for the pictorals, the title to the picture was D60&D30... something. I could be way off.

For kicks and laughs, here is a Toy birf next to a top loader 5ton Rzeppa and knuckles from the two.

good information in here

but isnt the point of the toploaders that you can run super high lift and still have useable driveline angles?

seems like that would be an issue with these

plus like was said the braking problem

i suppose if you keep it in 4lo you wont need brakes

If they are rockwells ARB has a locker for em i believe.
For 2 1/2ton Rocks they do, ARB dosent offer a locker for the 5tons. Although, there were/are 5ton Rockwells that did come with air lockers from the factory. Pretty trick, but I'd Detroit it F&R.
