Sorry for this long post. Tried to keep it concise but with all relevant info. I have a 1997 GMC 1500 Sierra (4 X 4 manual engage) with Vortec 5700 V-8 and 4 speed auto trans with overdrive, bought it new and currently with 67,000 miles. About a year ago, started having trouble with the transmission slow to shift to higher gears when first drive of the day, and the "anti-lock" brake light would come on after cranking and stay on for a few minutes and then go off, so had transmission and fluid/filter serviced. and the anti lock brake checked. The mechanic said the anti-lock brake module was giving out and he could not find a new replacement. Recommended against salvage yard replacement. He said the brakes would still work but the pulsating feature would eventually fail. After his service, the transmission seemed to shift better. The Anti-lock brake light would come on and usually go off after a minute or so. More recently, when I start out first drive of the day, the anti-lock brake light will stay on, the transmission won't shift from second to third gear and the speedometer won't work. I can drive around the neighborhood, stopping and starting, slowly driving, manually shifting the transmission gear selector, and after about 5 minutes or so, everything will start working properly and the anti-lock brake light will go out. Any suggestions welcomed. I looked at the archives on this forum and found some stuff but they were several years old with no real resolution.

If that's original mileage nice. The trans connection or bad ground, clean all the grounds before replacing parts. Right under driver seat location there's a couple grounds on the frame. Start there or simply let it warm up a bit. She's an old girl and probably been around the block at least once.

Thank you. Yes, original miles. I actually ordered it from GM, taking delivery of it on 12-31-96. The only milage it has missed is when the speedo malfunctioned recently with the shifting issue....missing less than a mile in total, I would guess. Anyways.....I decided to bite the bullet and take it to a transmission repair shop with a good reputation with the public and the BBB, located about 25 miles away. Before the drive over there, I raised the hood to check for any loose wiring connections, ect. The only thing I saw was someone had disconnected the hood light so I plugged it back in and it worked, I then cranked up and left for the shop. No problems. She worked as new. Must have been the unplugged hood light. Ha Ha. I left a copy and paste note of my post on here with the shop when I dropped her off. Today, got a call saying they could not replicate the shift/speedo/anti-lock brake light issue and all the wiring and connections looked good. I told them to replace the VSS module while they had it. I will pick it up tomorrow, so we shall see. I will post an update after I've had it back a few weeks.
