I recently did the bulbs in the climate control / hvac head unit in the dash.
For anyone who has bulbs out, they can be somewhat easily replaced.
The bulbs that are used are 3mm Bi-pin base incandescent bulbs, T-1 type.
You can get them at radio shack, currently they are 272-1154 12v/50mA incandescent bulb, having a 3.3mm bi-pin base. These have the little plastic base on the bulb that will be all brittle and break apart when you remove the old bulbs. Unfortunately these are $2.20 a piece, and the hvac head unit has 11 of them. Also, the original bulbs will have blue plastic covers on them, why i don't know. when you go to remove them you will most likely damage the bulb and it won't work, i did that on two of mine.

what will also work are microlamps, 272-1092 from radio shack, which are $2 for two. They just have wire leads which still fit on the circuit board, and I used 8 of these when I did mine, they work fine. Just make sure the wire leads are separated between the bulb and circuit board.
I believe these microlamps are what is used in the steering wheel buttons, will be doing those later this week.

in general, any 3mm sized 12v rated bulb should work at least on the hvac head unit. You will need a good soldering iron with a good pointed tip.

GMGR makes DIY LED kits for the climate controls for 2003-2006 models. The kits include cube LEDs and the instructions and the polarity diagrams. They have them in 4 color options. Easy kit. Took me about an hour and a half. They have other LED kits for the dash bulbs too. Cluster, steering wheel control and the left dash switches. GM Gauge Repair Onalaska Wisconsin | eBay Stores
