Cadillac Escalade Ext, Good for a DD?

So I've been trying to find my next gmfs for a while. First I was kicking around the idea of a RC/SB 1500 then an EC/SB 1500 with the plan that I'd do a 6.0L and 4L80e swap in the near future. Then common sense made me consider just to get a 2500HD and then the engine and trans will already be taken care of but then I eventually end up back looking at LBZ's and LMM's. BUT, today I stumbled across some Escalade EXT's and was surprised that I can buy some for less than 13k (2003-05).

I just don't know if the EXT would be good for what I need it to do: DD in a city during the week, pull a trailer between 4-7,000 lbs occasionally, and deal with lots of snow. I would have to swap out the front diff and transfer case so I could have selectable 4wd instead of AWD, not sure how bad reprogramming everything would be. Other plans would include a happy cam, tow mirrors possibly, small lift to fit some 285's or 305's and XD Monsters, tune, and exhaust. I don't expect it to go fast, just to be functional and nice to drive.

So I've been making a list of pro's and cons:

Pro's:
Its a Cadillac
Its an Escalade, bishes loves escalades
LQ9
Sweet interiors
Rides great
*06 tow mirrors might look sweet
**Probably still has drugs somewhere inside it
Pretty cheap compared to other 1500's of the same year

Cons:
Its a rebadged avalanche
Coil spring rear end
4L65E
AWD - would want to convert it to selectable 4wd
Lift kits are scarce
*06 tow mirrors most likely will look bad
NAV/HU is old and I hate stock ones anyways so it would need a new Alpine or Pioneer touchscreen
Midgates sometimes leak IIRC (most likely from user error)
**Probably still has drugs somewhere inside it
Probably will get stolen
Requires premium gas
Mileage???

So am I way off track here? Should I keep on looking for a nice 1500 or start looking for EXT's? Any thoughts?

If your down for 12 mpg on a great day then go for it. Also just roll with some esky 22's/ 24's because escalades that are lifted look like total dog shit imo. A selectable 4wd would be a lot of money and a pita to do. Why not just keep the awd and call it a day. Great hook-ups when racing it would be great.

It would be nice to have a selectable 4low. Ouch 12mpg, was hoping for 15mpg, checked some other sites this morning and they all say about the same thing.

What do you consider a lot of snow? You live in IL for goodness sakes.
Well last winter we barely had any snow but the year before that we got a decent amount. The main problem I run into is getting blocked into my driveway with snow piles from the plow trucks. That and my sonoma is sketchy on any amount of snow.

I say do it but I would just get the NNBS esky 22's and call it a day and maybe a new headunit...
It doesn't require premium gas btw it's just recommended I know plently of people that run 87. Just watch out for rear airbag leaks there pricey.
Is converting to 4wd really neccesary if so just get a silverado/sierra IMO

It would probably be easier to just get a 4wd instead of converting it, I have a denali and I love it. Coming from a selectable 4wd truck I was actually impressed with the awd but I will say sometimes I wish I just had a regular 4wd, not because the awd is inferior for me but solely for the purpose of lifting my truck would be less of a hassle. You dont have to run premium but when I always ran 89 in my lq9 6.0 but when justin from blackbear was tuning my truck he said I had a little bit of pinging and would get better performance running 91 (I now run 93 on a 93 octane tune though). Also my denali came without the electric suspension which saved me ALOT of money when I was replacing the shocks.

You might want to run the awd and see what you think, may be impressed; that paired with some all terrains and you might not have much trouble in the snow. I tow my familys 21 foot boat probably around 6,000 pounds and im impressed with the 6.0, it tows really well. Shouldnt have any trouble running a leveling kit with some 285s (thats what Im running), like I said if you have the electric suspension it might screw you but look into that. As far as performance I have an exhaust, k&n drop in filter, and a blackbear tune, im pretty impressed and happy with it.

I get 11-12mpg in very very extreme city driving, meaning going no further than 5 minutes away with multiple lights and stop signs for a week straight. 15-16 freeway, depends on how you drive. This is on 285/70/17s with a tune.

Sorry I know this is a whole bunch of info but figured id give you as much info as I can give on the LQ9.
