After a long drive (6 hours) yesterday i noticed that none of the buttons on my radio were working and the unit was extremely hot! Also the temperature control just below the unit was hot too. I have an 06 silverado CC with factory 6 disc changer and bose speakers and if it matters the temperature control is the digital one. Also the rear unit was hot too even though it wasn't on. The steering wheel controls were still working but nothing on the radio worked except the power button. Any idea what could be causing this? How dangerous is it? I'm stumped. Today when it cooled off all of the buttons were working again.

I've never heard of that happening, but I suspect the heat is causing the issue, and the heat is an indication of imminent failure. I'd say replace it before it becomes a potentially larger issue. I've seen a dash catch fire from a poor wiring job before, I'd hate to see it happen because something internal went wrong.

Thanks and i thought that it was weird that the rear unit was hot too. Doesn't really make any sense. I'm going to call the dealership and see what they say. I just don't want to pay them for a new radio as im sure its way too expensive

My 2000 GMC single disk has a cooling fan in the unit. I can hear it cycle when I'm parked listening to the radio. Not sure if it's an easy replacement when they go bad... in a pinch you may be able to add a quiet 120mm PC fan blowing on the case for cooling until you can replace the unit.
