i had to call out a recovery service this past week after getting stuck while trying to go recover a friends jeep... it doesn't look that bad, and we worked for hours trying to dig it out and placing all kinds of material to get a bite with the treads to no avail! even had another truck try to pull me out, however he couldn't get enough traction to get me out either. i need to invest in a winch and/or front bumper so i am never in this situation again. looking for ideas and suggestions of what's worth looking in to and what to stay away from... all help is welcome and appreciated!

I would look at most Warns 9000+ if you have the cash. If not, you can also look at Smittybilts. I've never had a good experience with Superwinch. Ramseys are expensive. Never had experience with mile marker or warn's economy line - tabor. Grab some shackles and it looks like you already have a recovery rope. Would also consider a snatch block since you probably won't be getting a 12000 or larger. Get some good leather gloves to handle the steel cable and the inherent frays they get over time. As for the bumper, make sure it is rated appropriately for the winch.

For the money, MileMarker is the way to go. I had a MileMarker for 5 years...awesome winch. It is slower than the Warns, but a lot cheaper. Besides, you don't need a fast winch unless you are in competition.

For the bumper...here in Texas, Ranchhand replacement bumpers are desired and look good. They are a lot cheaper than FastFour and Road Armor bumpers. You can get a Ranchhand bumper with a class III hitch up front, put your winch on a cradle and you can switch your winch from front to back.

Good Luck

Smittybuilt also has a waterproof line of winches...I got a quote for their 12klb models around $575 (seemed like a good deal to me)

They also make these tracks to slide under your truck in the mud..I haven't used them yet, but, for the price I was willing to give them a try!
