Gmfs needs one more burb build

Finally found a nbs Suburban parked near my house for sale. With a new baby on the way I wanted to trade my rcsb for something with a backseat and storage. I commute 90 miles a day for work so reliability and decent looks were of most importance. It was cleaner than most all others I looked at with a much more reasonable price tag than the used car lots and craigslist. Its a 2002 LT 4wd with 5.3 in one of my favorite colors of that era. The only catch is the odometer light is not working so I rolled the dice and trusted the guy selling since he was local to me. He claimed it was just a shade under 200k. The motor didnt tick one bit upon cold start up as most do with that kind of mileage so I feel pretty good about it. Interior is super clean and all switches, a/c and heat work. No signs of previous body work but paint isn’t perfect and a few small dents here and there. Gonna start cleaning it up and gmfs treatment this weekend. Got lots of free mods I can get started with by swapping over parts from my rcsb

First thing I want to do is front end maintenance. Has anyone used the control arms that already come with new ball joints and bushings or am i better off pressing in new stuff into current arms? Also wondering if aftermarket uca’s would be worth looking into when I crank the torsion bars. Maxing out the stock keys is my plan and usually provides around 2” of lift on the nbs pick ups if that

the loaded arms are worth it if you value your time lol. I got some 1.5” lift pucks for the rear if your interested. Came off my 01 tahoe

Sub'd for Burb build....

Miss mine at times.... :(

Bummer haven’t been on here enough lately to realize you got rid of your suburban. Yours and @Phildirt are my inspiration for this

Nice find, can’t wait to see it set up. Nice thing about this model is the color matched bumper cap, mirrors, and handles. Saves some work :). I have some keys, not sure if it’s worth shipping since they are pretty cheap anyways but I’m not ever gonna use them. Can probably get enough lift out of the stock ones and stay safe with your angles. Like Redfgt said the loaded arms are good, I used moog when mine were stock. Pretty limited selection of nbs arms but Silverado ones fit too. The only front end issue I’ve had is inner tie rods but that is probably from lift/bigger tires.

Usually maxing out the stock keys is the perfect combination of height and ride quality for me. Gonna give that a try this weekend and see how it looks. I had lift keys when I was younger and hated them as a teenager I know I’m getting too old to be bouncing all over the road now lol. I’ll probably get the moogs ordered up tonight so I can knock out all the front end work and get an alignment.

Got the the cluster out to try and fix the odomoter. I noticed what looks like tape on all the screw holes in the dash. It looks factory but didnt have that when i took the dash out of my 2000 truck. Anyone else ever seen these or is it a sign that a previous owner has had the dash out before?

Also pretty pleased with how good this interior looks for 2002. no broken radio buttons, and paint on the switches still looks good. I’m gonna love the full console. Cant count how many times my drink has spilled from the shitty dash mounted cup holders in my regular cab.

And the cassette deck so i can get my Garth Brooks on.

I've seen the plastic over the dash pin holes on my early NBSs as well.

Looks clean BTW!

Good to hear, maybe its a difference in manufacturing locations.

Couldn’t agree more. My dad loaned me his 18” k2 take offs that will probably go on once my front end rebuild and alignment is complete

The drivers side torsion key is maxed. The passenger has several turns left (stupid chevy lean) both sides settled at 36” fender height. I measured the rear shocks on the burb and the rear bilsteins on my rcsb. The truck shocks are 3” longer I’m wondering if they’ll work or should i just order the correct ones? Moog front end parts should be here Tuesday. Hopefully clean up the pollen and put in clean corners and debadge tomorrow. Stay tuned

See I always like those oem Tahoe wheels l, always thought they were kinda cool cause you don’t see them anymore esp with a meaty tire on them. Just my 2 cents

I have no clue lol how do you tell?

Your Burb have "normal" rear shocks? Mine had the Nivomat rear leveling shocks ZW7 Not Autoride system.... But heavy duty Nivomat shocks that self leveled.

I used shock extenders on my stock rear shocks with my coil spring spacer.

EDIT: Just saw your posts above about this. My page hadn't refreshed and I only saw older posts before rear shock discussion.

Big bulky black rear shocks. They measure out 3” shorter than my bilsteins (installed) so not sure if they’ll work or not. Did get the fronts from my rcsb swapped over and clear corners also. Next is a pretty new set of powerstop pads and rotors I want to swap. Poor truck is getting robbed of the only good things about it.

Front end goods showed up today decided to save $200 bucks and not go with loaded arms. I put the savings towards a pitman arm and some cosmetic stuff.

What is so bad about taking the steps off? Going to be doing this to my Tahoe once I get a chance

If it's like mine the threaded studs in the body will start spinning and you can't get the nut off. I had to hammer a screwdriver in there to put pressure on them and still ended up cutting a few off with a sawzall. Put penetrating oil on them before you even think about touching them. That and they are heavy so helps having a second set of hands. And dirt falls out of them while you are fucking with them. Etc etc.

cant wait to see where this build goes!

Dont get your hopes up lol. Once I find tires, wheels and tint the windows, it’ll pretty much be done. Its just an old daily driver that I’m trying to polish up a little.

@WillyPaul

I've been thinking about a bit of a nbs tahoe build myself. It's been rolling around my head for a while now. Everytime I see one that's clean, I start to wonder if it's for sale..

Not to thread jack but when did you sell your burb and what did you replace it with?

Sold last September. No replacement! Driving HD everyday since last March. Have (2) vehicles. Didn't "need" a 3rd.

Nice buy. I have an 05 Tahoe I bought to flip but ended up liking it. I bought it off an 87 year old man who ordered it new with literally every option. It now has about 50k miles. But the mod I recommend for the front is the Atomic Fab coil over in place of the torsion keys. The ride is night and day. I think mine is same color. You can also go to the tahoeyukonforum and there’s a guy from GM if tou give your vin he’ll send you the build sheet (sorry if that’s already known info).

Sorry for the absence. Building a house, a baby on the way, and just started a new position at work has taken up all my free time. I havent even gotten a tag for this thing yet lol.
Recently I put led’s in the cluster and head lights. Tie rods are done, upper control arm bushings and ball joints are in. Threw a coat of satin black spray paint at them before reinstalling. It’s currently tore down on jack stands while I’ve been working on the lower arms the past couple weeks. Oh and I got some chrome door handle covers from ebay for $10 to go for an esky handle look but they look terrible up close lol. I’ll probably trash them. Waiting on all this pollen to go away to demold and debadge.

Anyone got any wheel suggestions? I’m leaning towards some type of GM stocks with something like a ridge grappler or bfg all terrain. I’m picturing more of a rugged than flashy look for this build. Nothing bigger than 20” Also kind of digging these Fuel Rebels.

I think those darker wheels would look pretty cool. If any paint combo can pull off gunmetal, copper, or any of those off shades, it is the darker gray.
