So I decided to tackle the tablet install last weekend ... I didnt want to chop up the dash bezel, so i did everything as nondestructive as I could.

I started by taping up the dash bezel and laying two layers of fiber glass over the radio, ac, vent, and onstar openings.

Then after pulling the tape off trim the base to fit

i put bolts thru the front and glassed them in ... with the front piece secured to the bezel, i taped the back and made a back plate that would sandwich the piece to the bezel... gonna need some modification, it could be sturdier.. ill keep ya posted.

the flat piece i made on the work bench will be the back of the slot for the tablet. got it trimmed up here...

ill be honest, its kind of a work as i go thing i have an idea of what i want but not a sure way of doing it. so if you see a short cut im missing let me know .

for the relocation of the deck and ac controls , again i didnt want to cut the stock piece so im making it from scratch.. Just got the floor taped up and glassed today.. ill then take a piece of mdf or fiberglass that will fit both pieces and float it using dowel rods or just a 2x4... then wrap the whole thing in fleece and reinforce that.

while i was waiting on all that resin to set up i thought id tear into the ac controls. pretty much just followed what ive seen others do. i just had some blue leds aroung and an assortment of resistors. I dont remember all the numbers on the leds but i used 470 kohm resistors. i think im gonna go a brighter on the dials and dim the buttons a bit.

I'm doing the same thing. So is another fella I'm subbed to his thread too. And i went feet first and I cut my trim around where the tape player used to be. Ended up a Lil larger but added trim around it. If u go this route lmk bc ik some particulars on cutting out that bracket to fit after market head unit and it's angles bc u don't wanna set it in straight bc it'll be at a weird angle. I'm gonna start glassing my dash bezel prolly buy all that I need tomorrow. I'm using Acer iconia a500 tho with a dock and remote control for it as Well. I may cut my bezel just bc adding that dock and stuff will make it stupid thick and not even look close to stock. Also built a cubby hole where my radio used to be from Plexiglas and aftermarket head unit install kit with two blue led light strips hooked to a switch in my console. Great progress tho. U going iPad? Looks thin to hold iPad should work good. Subbed and hmu if u have questions.

Progress!!! although I have a SERIOUS lack of tools that would make this WAY easier, i made some good progress.

mdf side walls just taped em in place and laid some glass on the bottom.

made the installation slot piece and screwed it in place

**notice the funky ass cuts did ya ? yeah ... had to work with a skill saw and a shitty dremel that would have been pretty much impossible by itself.. ill fill that in later

Trimmed it all up

this is where i think i made a mistake. i didnt cut the screen hole until it was all put together. seemed like it coulda been easier had i cut it first. anyway ... i taped up the tablet and used it as a guide to get the slot perfect. sorry no pics but i used mdf strips that i took to the belt sander and ground them down to hold it in place but still look good.

trimmed up and a little sanding

reinforced the front piece with some more glass and connected the gaps.

BONDO BONDO BONDO
applied first layer ... sanded it for a couple friggin hours and then laid down a second

on the chore list for tomorrow:
extend wires to ac controls
*** opinions... should i put male/female plugs on the plug/leftover wires, then make a jumper wire with a female and male end ... to keep it easy to return to stock... stupid idea? .... or should i solder that bitch up?

and i MIGHT be able to reach the radio wires as is ... if not ... more wire extensions.

then... SAND my life away!!!

and finally tape the radio and ac controls to make a trim piece to cover up mount for ac controls and make the deck look a little more flush mount.

Got a road trip comin in the morning so i thought i would give everything a nice test fit. looks ok if ya ask me, some tweeks that need to be addressed is the angle of the deck is off, space above the deck needs to be filled (i think im gonna make a little phone charging bay there) and holy hell do i have some sanding in my future!

wire extensions are a pain in the ass! 14 wires for the radio and 24 for the ac controls. i wanted to chop the whole thing off, come solder half inside so i would have a soldering iron and heat gun in the cab as little as possible... but i found a bunch of wires are the same damn color... so i just did it one by one. i prepared the extensions by pre stripping and sliding on a couple things of heat shrink ... i knew id forget that shit if i didnt lol.

half way there!

Done!!

taped em up and ran under the dash... holy cow did that free up some room!... oh btw ... i took out the radio and ac bucket thing as well... just got in the way of the wires.

nice and neat.. testing controls out before puttin the console back in

fits pretty good.. the screen opening for the tablet needs just a bit more off the top but its pretty damn close. and i wired in a 12v plug in with the acc to the radio so i can plug the tablet in... the charger is molded into the dock.. if you notice the holes behind the tablet its cuz i salvaged a back plate from an old radio... thought using that might keep things a little cooler ... maybe not but worth a shot.. there will be swede glued in so it looks mo betta.

Yeah thes a plug secure in place for charging while Its in there but it plays via Bluetooth. I just left a hole , plugged it in with tablet in the dock, hot glued the plug where it was then bondo in place. It's actually the biggest flaw I'll have with this one, it doesn't tuck up as high as I wanted and you can see a bump on the bottom ... But it's not wildly noticeable so I'm gonna live with it lol

Got some sanding and a coat of primer on ... just to get an idea of what im workin with ... got a bunch of flaws in the thing but one more thin coat should get er ready for paint... and for the console... those corners are a real bitch to get to... still have a ways to go on that one ...

still more sanding on it and im still gonna do a bezel to cover up the ugly sides of the ac and so the radio looks more flush mount. kinda stuck on how i wanna tackle that ... im sure more fiberglass will be involved. also throwin around an idea i saw using abs plastic dissolved in acetone.

*** oh yeah ... and i gotta figure out how to access the power button to sleep/awake the screen

Looks great! I'm glassing my dash little by little today going to glass several pieces together so I don't have to cut the holes for hvac controls and cubbyhole where the radio used to be. What color are u going with the whole bezel or just the tablet area? The primer u used looks close to factory color what is it? I've also gotta find stock tan color and the dark grey or black for the stock look.

confused.. most that put tablet remove head unit all together. but ur just using yours as a giant mp3 player? but all that aside. i like the idea of how you did it. although losing the stock hvac vents is odd?

are you going to use it just to play music? and how is the quality from bluetooth?> seems it would be better if u ran a usb port or atleast a microphone jack.

Partin... yep truck is bone stock other than what I've shown . I thought it was odd too

Ohnine , yep its just a big ass mp3 player ... sq is fuckin awesome for the most part the only thing I fight with is shitty download quality. But that's something else all together. I've one of the biggest radio names in the Midwest compliment the sound so for my purposes I think its perfect. Losing the vent isn't that big of deal to me, the climate is still perfectly controllable as is. I stuck with BT bc my head unit doesn't charge on its USB. And usin a headphone jack would Be a pain BC of the way its setup to slide in... the charging port is on the bottum and headphone jack is on the side ... I suppose it could be done but but was the obvious choice for me. And I wouldn't get rid of the radio or DVD player .. I still use them too much to justify going only with the tablet. Also I'm getting a bt port that will send info from the computer to the tablet so no its not just for music

yeah I dont know ... ive thought about sandin the dash down and shooting some color on it ... just dont know what would look good to me that wouldnt clash with the tan. so for now ill just try and match the stock ... also I havent seen any white interior projects that i fell in love with, but id like to tie in the exterior color somewhere as well.

Hey I have a question bout the resin. I mixed too much together how long do I have before it is trash? Can I add a little laqure thinner to make it last lil longer or just trash it and make new? I've only got to glass the top panel left and I'm pretty sure I've got enough to finish but hate wasting resin BC it was 20 bucks lol
