bought a 2011 Gm certified Silverado from a dealer about 3 months ago. Never had to use the bed for anything yet till last weekend and opened the tail gate and found this rust on the whole lower half of the tailgate. Is this something that should have never passed a Gm certification?

There's a lot of exclusions in those warranties. We bought one once, with an '06 Impala LT3, back in '09. Two weeks later, the wireless key fobs stopped working. It wasn't covered, and we were out $500 to replace the wireless module. The dealer should have ate it, but didn't, and we'll never shop there again.

Hopefully your dealer is more like the one I bought my truck from, who was willing to have a paintless dent repair on a dent we noticed after signing. Plus I found the parking brake didn't work, nor did the mirror controls. All fixed at no cost, with a loaner provided.

Yup lots of exclusions on the gm cert warranty... it isn't exactly bumper to bumper like the 3yr/36k.
Just cause a vehicle is GM Cert isn't really saying a whole lot, Id still look it over really well and have it inspected by a mechanic just like any other used car.

I would take that rusty shit back and demand my money back. Although if you would have done a proper inspection, you should have noticed that before you ever purchased the truck.

Dude Id be soo freakin pissed, that would be covered im sure by my dealer I know for a fact they would never sell me or anyone I know a truck with a tailgate that bad especially on a 2011. that truck either got beat down the roads in the winter or somebody simply didn't care and just neglected their ride. regardless it needs to be addressed, if there is rust there god only knows what up under the bed, behind the taillights and all the seems welded throughout the truck. Id carefully inspect by pulling out the tails and looking up under your truck carefully, im sure there could be a lot more hiding.

The POS in my sig came with 5 yr/100k rust protection, that may apply to yours as well. What a joke it's already rusting like that. Take that thing back and raise hell.

so true, I know a few people who had to have gm replace cab corners within 2 years of being new. Thats with washing once a week in the winters too

Regardless of certified warranties, if your truck is under 100K miles/ 5 years old (2011, so I'm guessing pretty close for age from when it was sold new), it should still be protected under the rust/ corrosion/ perforation warranty. I would take it back and tell them to replace/ fix the tailgate.

I'm waiting on a call from the service manager from the dealer I bought it from to take it in and have them look at it. The dealer I take my truck to right by my work said that this rust would have never passed the Gm certification at there location.so I guess we will see what the dealer I bought it from does.

I believe they would, but at the same time, I wouldn't think a good dealer would've let that on the lot as a "Certified" truck. *shrug*

Good luck! I do think you have a chance; hoping that it's a stand up dealer!

I never heard of buying a truck and not opening the doors, hood tailgate etc before committing to buying it though, esp a truck that lived its whole life in a rust belt.

well the dealer denied the claim for rust claiming rust through only.but now this is the least of my worries.come to find out car fax showed last 2 owners were from michigan, when i called gm gm customer customer care i now find out truck started its life in canada.now under gm certification here in the us canada vehicle are ineligible for certification. so now the fun begins to find out how chevy is going to fix this issue stay tuned lol

I'm waiting to hear from a Midwest service rep about this, cause I'm now wanting out of the vehicle cause per Gm this vehicle does not have a certified warranty but I have all the paperwork stating it does. The dash also no one can explain how it went from kilometers to mph with out any records

#26 ·
that's fucked up, id sue the dealer for misinterpretation and false advertisement on such a deal. Id want answers on the dash and how could it have been swapped to mph, lots of questions and Id want answers if not they owe you a different truck.

I guess you missed the post Where I said Carfax showed last owner and registered was Michigan that's it so I assumed bought and sold from Michigan. But it was originally bought in Canada for 2 years then to Michigan for a year which is where the cardax registered then auction then dealer I bought it from.the form I posted is dealer only not what you receive from the dealer on what's covered and the dealer should have caught that since it was bought it Canada it's cannot be covered. Nowhere in the paperwork you receive from the dealer stated the Canadian vehicle part

You can toggle the digital display but not the numbers printed on the cluster. I guess it could be original cluster, just with a new face and reprogrammed for mph.

Ahhh, I'm dumb. Ya, after owning this truck for ~8 months, you'd think I'd remember what the cluster looks like with the printed numbers. I was confusing it with the '06 Impala we had that had the one set of printed numbers, and the toggle would just move the needle accordingly.

Keep us posted OP
